Hi,
Were the 38-55 Legendary Frontiersman rifles chambered for the long cartridge ?
What would the twist rate have been? Some posts I have read seem to indicate they were chambered for the long cartridge. Thanks for your help.

The rifles were chambered for THE STANDARD 38-55. The cartridges Winchester made especially for the Legendary Frontiersman ammo in the fancy boxes were SHORT, that is, blown out 30-30 length. The bullets were undersized for the old .380 bores too. I have two boxes if you need them. BvT

Legendary Frontiersman is chambered for Winchester Production Brass 2.080".

Long Brass 2.125" will not fit.

30-30 brass blown out = 2.020

Only the older guns were chambered for the long brass, I don't know when they made the change. Maybe someone here knows that date, but your Legendary is of newer mfg.

Twist should be 1-18, although there were a few with .375 x 1-12 barrels. Although I have heard these claims to have .375 barrel on a 38-55 Win 94, I have never seen one.

I have a OFW Commemorative 38-55(1980), and the groove diameter is .379". It and the legendary Frontiersman are the same.

I have a Legendary Frontiersman. It's condition is immaculate.
It chambers OLD R-P factory rounds w/o incident. Cases measure 2.125" to 2.126" and neck diam is.393".
I have no information regarding exceptions.

Just got some Starline 1.125 brass and tried them in my Legendary Frontiersman; They fit and chamber perfectly:smile:! Best thing is the Starline are in the form of the old 'balloon head' cases and hold about 4gn more powder.

Why Winchester make their brass 2.080 long is a mystery[smilie=b:

I got some of the first Starline long brass when they finally started shipping them. Those folks said at that time that it is much more difficult to draw the extra length without getting many more rejects. Undoughtably, Winchester found this too and then went to just making the the short brass from the 30-30 blank in order to simplify production as well.

The Starline brass is no where close to the old balloon head type but is thinner than some other brass which is possibly why it can hold more powder.
