this is the RCBS 82051 .457- 300 grain .45/70 mold that i removed the gas check step. came out ok. now i have a heavy bullet to use in the .45 colt. might have to try it in the .45/70 to see if it will shoot. could never get it to shoot well out of my
45/70 using gas checks or without.

Very nice job. You might want to explain exactly how you did it to help other fellas. :Fire:

sorry about that 44man. i used my mini-mill using a offset or adjustable boring bar head and a boring bar for removing the gas check step. then i used my dremel tool to polish out the mould using lapping compound and the little felt buffing wheels that come with the dremel tool. here are some pics. i also made a couple of compensators for my glock 23 using this mill. it's a small mill but if you use the right tooling and take your time with setting up the work piece you can acomplish quite a lot with these machines. Rick 459, Very nice work. Have you cast with it yet ? Wonder how much weight increase you'll get ? You might have a new job.

everytime i see stuff like this i get evious i would probably never leave the garage if i had a good milling machine and lathe.

well casted some of these .45's today and as dropped from the mould they weighed on a average 317.7 grains. after sizing to .452 most still weighed the same. the only problem with sizing down this bullet from .458 to .452 is that the lube groove on the bullet gets almost closed up as you can see in this photo. so i will just tumble them in LLA. want to see if this will improve groups in my .45 colt. i also sized some of them to .458 and will try them in my .45/70. stay tuned for progress report.

Didn't want to pop your bubble about using a .45 rifle mold for .45 pistol, so I let it
slide on the probable damage to excessive sizing. You may get it to work, but these
molds (I have two) already have a kinda marginal lube groove, doesn't seem like
shrinking it will help much. However - it may work great, it is definitely worth trying.

Excellent workmanship on the GC removal, about as nice a job as I have ever seen.

Those small machines are none too forgiving when it comes to getting a good finish. You did well indeed.

your right about the lube groove being marginal to say the least. will try lubbing with liquid alox first then will try moly coating them as i already have the set-up to moly my J bullets.

... will try lubbing with liquid alox first ...You'll be fine! check out a smooth side, lubegroove-less CB group at about 1900fps. (You must have seen this pic before).[smilie=1:

303Guy, didn't you say you're paper patching those boolits tho?

Try pan lubing the bullets first then resizing. The lube in the grooves might prevent their collapse.

fill the grooves with lube ,then size. they will stay full size.

I got those rcbs 300GC boolits to shoot well using 49.2 grains Vitt-133 in my 45-70.

Dang, if you pay attention you can sure learn stuff on this site.

I never thought of sizing them down with lube in the groove. I'll try it the next time
I need to "oversize" a boolit.

Great little tidbit! Thanks.
