As you may know, it is no longer produced. Unfortunately, new data doesn't include them. Good reason not to toss old load data source books. And yes, HS7 & W571 are one in same.

Thanks, 35remington. I too have some w571 i would like to use. These days, it's just about a nessessity to use what i have, i haven't found a store with a pound of ANYTHING (other than pyrodex) in months. i've been looking all over the net, and this is the best info i've found yet. As 571 is a slow shotgun powder, it should work in mag pistol. do you have any data for .357 mag? .44mag? THANKS in advance.

Sorry, but the Winchester pamphlet lists no W571 loads for 357 or 44.

At least you've got excuse to shoot it up in 45 ACP and 38.

I bemoaned the passing of W571 for several years.
It was THE propellant for 1¼-oz loads in the 3-inch 20-gauge shotshell. I used countless pounds of it in my little Browning BSS Sporter, killing all manner of feathered beast over my pointing dogs.
W571 and 1¼-oz of copper plated #6 shot would produce enough velocity to drive the pellets clean through a tough Iowa Pheasant. I’ve been told countless times that HS-7 is the same powder but my tests in the 3-inch 20-gauge do not bear this out; it just don’t perform the same, velocity or pattern quality.
In the 2¾-inch 20-gauge loaded, with 1⅛-oz #7½ shot, W571 would produce uniform, high velocity, darn near full choke patterns from my improved cylinder tube, HS-7 just doesn’t do the same.

HS7 data from Hodgdon Data Manual 26
357 Magnum: start gr. vel max gr. vel CUP
158-160 gr. lead 9.0 1162 10 1299 25,600
same for similar wt jacketed but pressure slightly higher vel very similar
200 gr lead 7.5 1041 8.5 1142 29,600

44 Magnum - Handgun bbl. 7"
250 gr. lead w/gc 11.0 1082 13.0 1237 27,800

There's more but my scanner doesn't work and I'm tired of typing this. If you need a specific bullet type or wt. let me know and/or I can photo the whole works.

OR you could just swap me the stuff for my shotgun :kidding:'cause I'm another one that wishes I could get more. Regards, Woody

I use it for maximum vel .38 Super loads. I have shot around 60,000 loads of
158 gr LSWC over 7.2 gr of HS7/W571 in a non-W-W +P case ONLY in my unsupported
chamber Wilson Colt comp gun. Very accurate, actually was in the older Hodgdon
manuals as a safe but max load. Case life is great, IIRC it makes around 1150 - 1200 fps in
that pistol.

BUT - in an unsupported chamber WW brass will fail on first shot 85% of the
time. VERY bad. I had to be extremely diligent in sorting out accidental range pickup WW brass.
R-P +P, Midway, Fed +P, PMC, anything but WW would last forever. WW was
dangerous.

It should be great for .357 mag loads. Since the case is larger that Super, I'd guess that
7.2 gr would be a fine load, maybe well below max under a 158 boolit in .357 Mag.
