It's not a stupid question at all. In fact, I asked the same thing once. The consensus was that it's a very bad idea to use batteries as a source of lead. I belive that some folks use the terminals sucesfully.

Here are a few of the threads:

I'd sooner go back to my practice wifes cooking before using lead plates from a battery. And the chances of that happening are non existent.

I tried the battery thing not long ago, it didn't work out at all.

(1) The process and the materials can be hazardous. (2) It's a lot of trouble (3) There is almost no salvagable lead in modern batteries.
I'd break off the posts and dispose of the batteries. The time I tried to salvage battery lead, the posts were about all I got anyway.:coffee:

Except for the terminals, stay away from battery lead! The potential health hazards are real and make it an unwise thing to do. Stick to WWs, plumbers lead, etc.

Snap the posts off the battery and sell it to a battery recycling company. Stop at the scrap yard on the way home and pick up some lead. Much safer and easier to do.
