Hello All,

I am looking for some input on a .40 s&w load. I will be loading 155 grain truncated cone boolits (from a saeco #40 mold), using win 231 powder. These rounds will be shot primarily through a glock #27. I am looking for a low to medium power practice load, nothing hot. Any recomendations on what powder charge to start?

As a follow up question. Is there any good formula for converting known load data using jacketed projectiles to a safe load using cast boolits? For instance, the Hodgdon data recommends using 5.0 grains of 231 with a 155gr XTP projectile. Can I use this data to get a rough starting point with cast?

Five grains of 231 is the place to start although I prefer slower powders in the .40 S&W.

Starting jacketed bullet loads will always be safe to use with cast bullets. The lead bullets give slightly lower pressures. You may run into other problems that you'll have to work your way through, but they won't be safety issues unless you ignore major leading.

I shoot 5.0 of 231 behind a lee 175 tc cast ww. The kids even like em.

I use a little slower powder. I use AA#5. Works good in 1 158 gr boolit and a 175 gr.

My current favorite is 6.8 grains HS-6 under the Lee 401-175-swc.
