Took a 3 year old cow today with a 8mm max boolit, 35.0 grs WC846 + dacron going 1882 fps. Shot was at 40 yds, put the boolit where spine hooks to the head, she dropped ontop of her legs, boolit bored a 50 cent hole thru one side of vertabrae and didn't exit, when I cut the head off spinal cord was full of bone schrapenal, boolit must be in there somewhere- I'll dig around for it later. Took about an hour and a half to gut, skin and quarter, hopefully some good eating!

Way to go!!! I'm getting set to cast for my 8x57 and had planned on pcking up the mold for the 8mm Max. I wondered how it would do on game and it sure sounds promising. Congrats and .........hey...where are the pics of this.........bring em on.

About 30 miles east of GreatFalls. Marcus Ranch- Corey seemed pretty impressed with a cast boolit putting it down instantly, said he figured 1100 pounds on the hoof. Can't beat a spine shot for a quick "freeze" figured there wasn't any need to try a body shot, since the purpose of the trip was to produce the best and most "steak" possible, although I would like to see how that boolit performed on a lung shot- next year during hunting season. The weather was kind of unruly uop there today, glad to be home by the fire!

Scooter,

Sounds like a memory! How hard was your bullet?

And only an hour and a half is fairly good time for an animal that size.

Looks like it ought to last a little longer than a Thanksgiving day turkey!

Good eatin'. Is that place around the old Dearborn Ranch? Love that country.

Bass; the bullets were 9/1 alloy, that makes a 12 BHN ingot, when boolits are cast hot and dropped on a damp towel they are about a 14-15. I had a helper with the skinning, a cordless sawsall for bones, and the bobcat is a wonder for moving something that big around, wish the last dozen elk were that easy!
Waksupi; this is east on the Lewistown hiway, but yes, the Dearbourne area is beautiful, we had blowing snow up and back yesterday, I was down to 45 mph a couple times, you could just see the end of the hood, not much stuck here, looks like someone dumped flour all over.

That's me grey hair and ball cap, my helper dressed a little light, so he spent a lot of time in the pick-up with the heater running- Californian don't ya know! he-he Damn good helper tho, has helped me cut up elk, deer and antelope and is willing to learn- buffy next!

There's about 1350 members on this forum, and I'm betting about 1349 of them are jealous as hell of your buffalo.

Heck, no reason to be jealous! But I will be thinking of you JR when I cut into that first tenderloin- YUM!

Had liver and onions last night, it was GREAT! If I didn't want the skull we'd be eating brains and eggs for breakfast, haven't had deer brains for years now with the CWD scare- OMG what next

Congratulations...nice buffalo! I'm guessing that you pulled it out of that herd along Highway 200 near Raynesford.

Your choice of an 8mm and a cast bullet would put you in some very unique company. Very few modern hunters get a chance at buffalo and most either chose the old calibers for tradition or one of our more common big game cartridges. Until now, I've never heard or read of anyone hunting buffalo with an 8mm...much less using a cast bullet. Seems to me, you possibly could have been the first to do it.

Enjoy those steaks!

MTW: that's the place. Yes I like to do it my way, day before we left it was still up in the air as to the gun to use- 50 cal ML/ 360 minnie- 223/55 Bator- 8mm /250 max. I don't think I would hesitate a bit to point that 8mm at an elk or moose, or griz if need be.

You take a buffalo with that .223/55 gr. Bator and its a virtual guarantee you'll have yourself a first. Not many use .22 caliber cast bullets on a buffalo hunt.

Yup! We're all envious. I used to live up in the GF, Choteau, and Lewistown areas and am thinking of going back some day... maybe. Great country! Might try Cascade next time. Good that you enjoyed doing the buff with your 8mm but I'd love to poke one with my
.45-70 and a 500 gr. 1881 made with 20:1 alloy. One of those and a buff just sounds right to me.

swheeler,

I'm not familiar with your bullet. When you get done eating would it be possible to post a picture? What is the diameter of the meplat?

Thanks,

swheeler

Old Vic; it has a .200 meplat and is sold by Mid-South as, special order 8mm Maximum. I size it to .313 and use it in the 91/30 MN also. Only picture I have right now.

Congrats on the Bison....have gotten a couple of them myself and know that they are excellent eating!! Just a quick question, what are your plans for the skull, or are you doing a mount of some kind??

swheeler
03-15-2006, 02:53 PM
deadpan; I think I will let the magpies and maggots take care of it for me! I called 3 of the local taxidermists just to get an idea of price on a shoulder mount, cheapest was 800 and highest was 1200- cost as much as the buffalo! One guy said he had flesh eating beattles to rent for 50, but I figured they might get loose and eat our dog!!ha-ha-ha-ha SOMEDAY I'll draw one of those permits for a buf out of Yellowstone, then I'll shoot a big bull and he will be mounted for sure!Someday has never come for moose, goat or bighorn tho, and yes I buy lotto tickets but someday has never come there either!
