What is the major differance between 1R and 2R roundnose boolits. I'm looking for good boolit for squirrel hunting in .38 or .357 in Encore. I'm leaning towards round nose design for less meat damage.

2r is "pointier" than 1r more like a spitzer design. Don't know that I've ever seen a 2r pistol boolit.

Lyman 311359. Its used in the 7.62x25 all the time. When I can afford another mold, that is the one I'd setting my sights on.

Yeah, a 2R in .35 caliber would be pretty heavy for a handgun boolit. The R number tells how many radii = the ogive, jar-wv. A 1R would be a true round nose

jd, how much would that boolit weigh?

Not so heavy after all, I guess. As long as the OAL is within limits he should be good to go.

yeah, the 311359 is only a 115g boolit. Well within the limits of the ToK Catridge. But for .358 cal, you'd probably have to have a mold made. It would necessitate a long, moderately heavy boolit. Not to mention it wouldn't fit in most guns. You'd probably have to load it in .38spl cases to for a .357mag gun. Maybe trim some down to .38 long colt length to get them to chamber. It would just depend on the boolit.

Humm...

My .357 "squirrel" load is the 358180 RF in pure lead at about 500fps...

If anything it doesn't do ENOUGH damage... Icepick city. I've had to go and "chase" down a squirrel & pith it because a .358 through & through hole simply isn't immediately lethal...

Have you tried the Ranch Dog boolit yet? Its a 190g RF. Wondering how it will perform.

No. But I think it would probably perform the same - i.e. punch straight through with little real KE transfer.

Maybe doesn't do any damage because it's going too slow. I know guy that uses 40 cal flintlock and if he misses head it really tears em up with soft lead rb.

Reason I asked question is because I see Lee has both 1R (150 gr) and 2R(158 gr) molds. Just wondering if one would be more inherently accurate than the other for some reason.

Yup , them limbrats is plenty tuff to kill with a puny little .358 boolit. I highly recommend you gun up to 45/70 with 405 gr boolits to stop these
onery critters.[smilie=1:[smilie=1:

Goodness. The 358311 is a 2R boolit, as is the 358385 (according to Lee's definition of '2R'). Standard .38 Special boolits. Can't comment on hunting usage re difference between RN & SWC/WC/pointy boolits...
If you want a RN boolit for hunting treerats, JAR, try the 1R mold and let us all know your results.

Personalli I would go with a light wadcutter for squirrels. I nailed a woodchuck with a target loaded .38 WC and it produced a nice 1/2" hole through its head. Very effective!
