If you want more lead do you have to have another root canal? :kidding:

Nice haul though!

That is good.
However,
I melted mine, and they make a real shiney lead! It is different from the roof boots I usually use for pure.
I might reccomend, ingot those up, and blend them in with your regular mix in the place of pure lead, one ingot at a time.
The ingots I made from them cast smoother, and shiner. Mostly, they just did not feel like ordinary lead.
They blend real well though and I did not notice anything negative on casting/fireing them.

I used to work there. That lead has a lot of tin in it!!!!

My original thoughts were to cast it into 00 Buckshot using my Sharpshooter mold. Or, do you think it would be better used for .38 specials or 30-30 Win?

Really? I wonder how you would test the percentage... I have about 30# of it myself, and more coming...

After you get gone paying the dentist bills that is going to be the most expensive lead I have ever heard of.

The anticipated joy of using that lead would help with the pain of getting a root canal. Not THAT much, but some.

I e-mailed some friends at Dental X-Ray. I'll get the composition of the lead, at least the Kodak dental packets.

I got a load of dental lead about that size many years ago. Made real nice .490 round ball that shot very well in my Hawkin. I've got a fawn buck with a head shot (I've got a pic if you need proof) at 30yrds with that batch. 8-)

Mine look just like those, and I have a fairly constant supply, my daughter works for an endodontist.

I did a hardness test on some, and it came out 8.7 BHN. I've read that they are 99% lead and 1% tin.

I melted down about nine pounds of those films today...for the first time. I checked hardness with the Lee tester and got multiple readings of 7.8 BHN. They may harden a little over time, so I'll check again in a week.

I was surprised they tested that hard, so I used the search function here to see what popped up. It appears that 8 BHN is a pretty common test result...except for the guy who has a Cabine Tree tester. Two different threads he kept claiming 14 BHN. Maybe he just doesn't have his technique figured out, because that tester is supposed to be better than that.

As for alloy content, it looks like it is (most probably) 98% lead, 1% tin, and 1% antimony when going by what the searched threads turned up. If the antimony is missing, that's fine with me.

But, I don't see how a niggardly 1% of tin (in 99% lead) can bump the hardness up from 5 to 8 BHN.

Speaking of hardness testers and getting incoherent results...
I have a pile of lead I bought from one member a year ago (or more). I took four or five of his heavy flat rate boxes of (what was supposed to be ) "soft lead". One box never showed up, and I eventually told him to just forget about it.

Anyway, I was wondering about using some of it to make my next batch of casting alloy, so I ran a hardness test on a chunk. It came out at 14 BHN! I'm afraid to guess what's in it. Obviously it is well-laced with antimony...which makes it unusable for me.

I suspect the seller got his 'soft' and his 'ww' mixed up when putting it in boxes.
Anyway, I think I like these dental foils. So, if you have some...but actually prefer wheelweights, I'd be happy to trade pound-for-pound.

Just got back from the dentins empty handed. I was hopeful after reading the op's post, but my dentist has gone digital also! Maybe I just need to find a new dentist!

My dentist has switched to digital but I asked him about the film. A couple of days later he delivered about 40 lbs to my house plus some large ingot chunks too.

I just got this from Kodak Dental X-ray. The lead they use is Lead >96%, Tin 1.5% +/- 0.1%, Antimony 1.5% +/- 0.1%.
