got a new mold for my 358 win. , gas check this time! I want to get between 1800 and 2000 fps with this boolit, lyman 358315.

I know all about fitting the size to my gun, that has all been determined with the pb I have been shooting.

I will be hunting with these, so I will want to stay on the soft side, but still get the velocity I want.

I know the powder I use will have a large impact on the preasure vs velocity, so I have decided to use reloader 7 for these because the preasure is low compared to the vevocity. I know there are MANY variables to be sorted out.

what I want to know most of all is a .35 cal, gc boolit of acww + tin, up to the task of this velocity?

ACWW are good for 2600 easy if you paper patch them. And you dont need a GC.

Velocity, pressure, powder, alloy, expected expansion. These are the things that make this interesting. You man have to decide between lead free velocity and expansion - OR - try BruceB's method of pouring up softnose boolits to get expansion. Have fun! Mike

ACWW + 2% tin will be a good practice bullet up through 1700-1800 fps with which you can shoot all day without cleaning the barrel. If you go higher in fps for hunting then you should clean the barrel evey 5-10 rounds to maintain the best accuracy. I push the RCBS 35-200-FN at 2135 fps cast of that alloy out of my M91 Mauser with 26" Shilen barrel 35 Rem. I clean the barrel every 5 shots with accuracy (aperture rear/post front sights) running a consistent 2 moa. Great for hunting out to 200 yards.

I will add that I was not able to get such accuracy with the Lyman 358315 bullet over 1700 fps or so in my rifle.

i mix 25% pure with my ww's and about 1/2% tin added and water dropped.
i use the saeco 245 and for hunting follow the bruce b method of soft nose. need a whoping 10 a year maybe, 1 usually is enough.
48.5 grs of rl-19 makes a happy rifle. h-4831 worked fairly well too.
not sure of the velocity but the accuracy and recoil is all i want.

only wanted the velocity to flatten the trajectory! my pb 196g at 1200 fps will work fine, in the timber. just thought I could push the gc 204g fast enough, to use out to 200 yds with out it having a rainbow trajectory.

TREERAT, I have the same objective. To that end I aimed for a topedo rather than a boolit but then I thought the trajectory might not be what I want so I came up with a lighter boolit of 220gr (303 Brit). I then went to 200gr and am now heading back up to 220gr. The reasoning is that with enough sectional density I can use a slow powder that fills the case without having to harden my boolits. I have tried Wheel Weights un-hardened and had good preliminary results at around 1900fps (maybe less). The 'topedoes' weighed in at 245gr and definately reduced the velocity I could achieve (without going overboard with pressure - and resultant leading). I have no idea how the 200grainers perform on the range but pressure and powder volume seem promising. Now I have added lead pipe to my alloy and this stuff comes out tough! Not brittle, just tough. Here are some pics of bullets fired into my 'test tube'. (Not the tough stuff - just WW's)

I wasn't kidding! At a rough guess I'd say I wouldn't want to be at the receiving end of one of these!

Judging by the performance of straight WW at 1500 out of a 35 Whelen using the 260 gr. Bator 358 boolit on woodchucks, porkies and a horse carcass that alloy should do fine. You might need a little heat treating, hard to say. Each rifle will dictate what your max velocity/pressure is with a certain load/boolit/size combo.

Keep in mind the size and fit that works with that PB boolit isn't necessarily going to be to same as what the GC design wants. Different pressure curve, different requirements. But, with luck it'll be close enough to lead you to the good grouping at the desired velocity while giving you at least 5 rounds of lead free shooting. And lets face it- if you haven't got that deer in 5 rounds you probably aren't going to need to do anymore shooting.
