how critical is the proper top punch? I have a 430 top punch now and ordered a new mold that takes a 311 top punch, but forgot to order the punch! since both bollits are round nose, would I be able to use the one I have now? or will I need the correct punch.

Try it and see. Just depends on how much difference there is in the shape and how hard it is to size.

I collect top punches that are either larger or deeper than what I need for a particular boolit. I then cover a boolit in silicone or a light layer of vaseline. I mix up some JB Weld (two-part epoxy will do fine as well) and daub it into the top punch, then raise the boolit into the top punch. I gently wipe away the excess, then let it sit overnight until it has hardened up.

Now I have a custom top-punch that is an exact fit for that particular boolit mould.

Often a flat punch with the correct diameter will work well.
