Yes. Many times. Always

a hollow point will expand. but if the bollit is too hard or too fast they sometimes come apart an make a shallow wound. plus you gotta admit the do look cool, do'nt they!

It's mainly for the cool factor.

With the right alloy, right design & velocity, they expand quite nicely.

Ahhh, nice pics. I love making real flying ashtrays with my Lyman 452374 NEW HP mould. Those pics remind me of the old "Don't do drugs" ads: (This is your boolit. This is your boolit on hollow point with the correct alloy. Now THIS is your hollow point boolit after being fired into something fleshy at about 1,000fps. Any questions????????????):twisted::twisted:

In some designs it moves the center of gravity to the rear enough to make the boolit shoot much better.

HPs in cast bullets are there to increase terminal ballistics through expansion. I have been using cast HPs for 40+ years in hanguns and rifles. A good soft maleable alloy must be used and if velocities are over 1000 fps or so then a GC'd bullet works best. I have shot numerous animals from rock chucks to elk with HP'd cast bullets and hard cast bullets at velocities from 900 fps to 2200 fps. In all cases the HP "killed" quicker which to me is "better".

I prefer a properly cast and loaded HP cast bullet to hard cast bullets for deer, elk and bear along with the assorted varmints from rock chucks to coyotes and especially pissed off badgers. Should the need arise a suitably soft cast HP bullet(S) from a handgun I may be carrying are preferred for 2 legged varmints/miscreants as they are proven to "stop" the anti-social behavior quicker.

Here is Ranch Dogs .375 boolit cast of 25/1 lead/tin fired from my 1893 Marlin 38-55 into a feral pig. Non hollow point expands just fine. More than I intended it to.

Use clean lard if you can, the best being rendered yourself. You don't want the salt from bacon or sausage drippings to coat your bore.
