After making a search it seems that with a 180 gr. bullet in a 30-06 the lowest you can go is 1200 to 1300 fps.
Would like if possible go sub sonic 1000 to 1085 fps, I have tough of powder like trail boss red dot etc.
if any of you have some experience in this field,
I would like to know what powder you use and charge?
the reason for my asking is that at my shooting range 200 yards is the farthest we have and I would like to duplicate shooting at 450 to 500 yards conditions with this load if I can achieve it with your help....
thank you in advance Michel....

I have used 7.5gr Red Dot with a 180 and got around 1k fps.

The books only go down so far because it seems everyone wants speed. Just take a fairly fast powder, Red Dot or any of the Dots would be a good choice, and keep going down till you either hit your desired speed or stick a boolit.

Check Leverguns.com. Paco Kelley has done a lot of work on subsonic "whisper" loads. May be something in there you can use../beagle

thank you all...
was afraid of going below recommended data but it seems safe....

Try searching under "cat-sneeze loads"( and variants). It's been discussed for about everything up to (and including) .45-70. You might also find some data in the 'favorite loads" section. IIRC, the old gallery load for the '06 was 7.0 gr Bullseye under a 311413 (~168 gr).

Canuck, just to review, it's safe with fast pistol powders and cast bullets. Either slow powders or jacketed bullets can get you into trouble. You probably knew that, but it's important enough to make a point of it.

I'm currently running a classic rifle bench rest competition at of my clubs 25yrd indoor range.

We are using 5 grains of any fast powder loads e.g. Bullseye, Redot or our favourite VV N310. Courtesy of Ed Harris. Read his article, its a sticky in the CB Loads/Military Rifle forum.

These loads work very well at this range, we tend to use lighter boolits just to be sure that the ME is well within the range certificate and all loads have to be chrono verified and ME calculated.

Calibres mainly being used are .303" British, 6.5 Swedish, and 8mm. They all tend to do around 8-900 fps. Some of the 6.5 loons use a 140 gn boolit. I'm also shooting a 8x58RD Swedish rolling block with a heavier boolit in this load and it shoots well but there is some blow back so glasses are particularly needed.

Also,You would be surprised at the accuracy that can be achieved with these "whisper" subloads 5-6 grs of Bullseye with a decent bullet in the 06 will hold 2 moa in mine @100 yds with issue sights. My backyard load is 2.8 grs of Bullseye and a 185gr pill ,Very quiet and works well for OH practice when I cant make it to the range.

This is really good stuff guys and talk about timing. I have been contemplating this for my 45/70 but wasn't too sure where to start.
This is why people should join this site a veritable encyclopedia of info!

went shooting having some Saeco #391 bullets (190 gr.) for my 30-06
my rifle is a Tikka T3 lite....
tried trail Boss at 10 gr
clay at 8 gr.
700X at 6 gr.
all gave me around what I wanted 1050 fps to be under the speed of sound
RESULTS.....
all powder group at about 2 inches group at 100 yards but had flyers in the group opening it to 3 to 4 inches....
NOTICE......
when I crank up the velocity to 1500 fps with Unique 15 gr. groups went down to
1and 1l2 inches, must be a to heavy and long bullet to stabilize at sub sonic speed ?
will go to the range soon but will try some 140 gr and 165 gr. bullets and will report to you guys.
as many of you said this is interesting
my goal is to have a load equal to my 22 lr. and practice long range shooting with it to 200 yards which equal shooting a 30-06 at some 440 yards.....
till then take care .... Canuck

When shooting small amounts of powder in large spaces, powder position in the case can have an effect on muzzle velocity and groups.

thank you for reminding me
I will be shooting a lot of round and I will need a powder that is not sensitive to position because putting filler will take to long and I am using a progressive press
I know that unique is not position sensitive, could you tell me which powder are not position sensitive in the burning rate of red dot?
thank you Canuck

Be very careful with reduced loads!!! You can create an explosive situation by using low charge weights. This subject has been addressed on some of the sub-sonic web sites. Seveal of the comments above are correct insofar as powder position in the case, etc. I shoot .308 Win subsonic and load 10.2 grains of Trail Boss. Most of my loads are either 180 or 190 SMKs. A bulky powder like Trail Boss is the way to go for plinking loads.

Hodgdon Titegroup is also position insensitive.

I currently use 0.9g Bullseye to push a Lee 452-300RF out of a 20" Puma 454 Casull loaded in 45 Colt cases. Sounds like an air rifle when it leaves the barrel. I'm guessing it's running around 600.

thank you jaybird62 for the warning
have good success in my 358 winchester with trail boss
will definitely look into it.....
and on top of this it keeps you from doing double charge especially if you use a progressive press like me...Canuck
