Question for the computer cognoscenti

I would like to be able to conveniently disable macromedia flash. There is a product called flashswitch, which is free. Since it is free, I’m suspicious it may be spyware. Is anyone familiar with this product?

I don't know about it because it only works with IE and I don't use it. You can use Firefox and it has a built in popup and flash blocker in addition to a bunch of other features not avialable on IE.

Free for the download at: http://www.mozilla.com/firefox/

Wills,
If your running Windows OS, and your concerned about spyware, Microsoft has a free spyware program that I've been for sometime.
It's a beta application, which means it's still under development, but I think it does a pretty good job. Windows Defender (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=435bfce7-da2b-4a6a-afa4-f7f14e605a0d&DisplayLang=en)

I second the motion. Total ***. It has never found anything on my computer since it was installed, even though it updates itself and runs nightly.
Try SpySubtract, you can download a free 18day trial then decide if you want to buy it http://www.intermute.com/downloads/hp/
and AdAware SE Personal which is free and works great and you can update http://www.snapflies.com/dlnow/dlnew.dll?lnc=no+id=100156

I have the McAfee Security Center and I run Sypbot Search And Destroy, and so far as I know am not plagued by spyware.

The main thing I am trying to do is get rid of Macromedia Flash, but I know if I try to uninstall it, it will keep trying to reinstall.

I know a lot of spyware comes bundled with some kind of free program, and I want to make sure flashswitch is not a vehicle to deliver sypware.

Wills......Macromedia Flash isn't bad. But if you insist on removing it go to add and remove software that is located in the Control Panel.

Wills,

If you're worried about bad stuff that comes along with programs, heck Acrobat Reader has ActiveX, which is bad but Acrobat won't work without it.

It drives me into a rage. If I wanted to watch a bunch of stuff jumping around on a screen I would watch the Gosh Darned television. I pretty much refuse to do business with anyone who uses it, but cant avoid everything.

Wills,

Alot of the nicer sites that have those little "videos" give you the choice to skip the introductions, which is the silly videos.

There is another alternative that adds no additional software to your system. It's not 100% but has been very effective for me. You can modify your host file to spoof the ad servers into thinking your computer is the source. This works with both Windows or Linux operating systems.
Here's the link: http://www.everythingisnt.com/hosts.html.
