Hello
New caster and I sure got the fever. I have a lyman 311041 30 cal FN GC 173gr. I cast up a load of em installed gas checks and lubed em up. Sized em at 308. Now my question is I got the mold for my 30/30 but want to use em in my 30/06. Was going to use Red Dot @ 11gr to start. The other powders I have are 760 and 2400.
Can I use any 308 or 30/30 cast bullet for my 30/06 or do I need bullets listed for the 30/06
Thanks in advance

you can use any 30cal in the 30-06.
however your results will be different with each boolit, powder charge,
lube,seating depth,primer,brass,boolit diameter,etc.

change any one of these and it will shoot different;could be worse, could be better,
could stay the same......

this is an obsession, make no mistake about it

remember to think about WHY you want to do this and be happy with your choice.

ITS ALL ABOUT THE JOURNEY

good luck!

+1 to Legend.

There have been posts about that boolit in the .30-06.

Oh yes, that boolit works great in my 30-06 Handi Rifle.

"Ben" (pretty sure it was "Ben") had a load listed here using H4895, 30grs, with a 1 gr dacron filler with the 311041.

I got 3/4" groups at 50 yards with it. Shot a decent 4 point deer with it this past season with it - double lung/top of the heart - 30 yards & dead. Shot was at 70 yards.

If it doesn't work for you, it may be the size - did your bore slug .308" or less? Two of my 30-06's slug .309" & I size them to .311".

The cast bullet association folks have a big following of using 13 grs of red dot in 30-06 sized cases.

311041 is an excellent bullet for most all .30 cas, especially the '06. The load mentioned above with 4895 and the dacron filler is an excellent one though you might work from 28 to 32 gr in 1/2 gr increments to see what your rifle likes. You also may do better with a larger sized bullet. The bullet should be sized to fit the throat not the bore/groove depth. I've found a .311 sized bullet (if the drop that big from the mould) most often gives the best accuracy. Good luck with that bullet in your '06, it is an excellent choice.

BTW; 2400 (no filler needed) is also a good powder for that bullet in the '06. Try working up in 1/2 gr increments from 20 to 24 gr.

shoot a few, check for leading, I think you have them sized a bit small, but that's just me.

Thank you all. I am mainly a cowboy action shooter. Cowboy names Vesparado. I own a scooter shop . I always wanted to reload for my Grand and 03 this is my first shot. I got the dies but wanted to cast my own after the success I had with 45 colt and 38 special.
I need to and will slug the bores of the grand and 03. As cast the bullets are 310 and 311 average. i have the 308 and 309 Lee sizer on order and should get them Tuesday. I will also order the 311. Whats the deal should I go .001 larger than the rifling.
I have found some great stuff on this board and hope to be able to contribute to it soon.

You may want to do a search on specific loads for the Garand. I have never done any, but I think there are powders that you may want to avoid when loading for that rifle.

I have been shooting it for about 25 years with good results. Sizing the bullets a little larger might help them shoot better depending on the rifle.

Is there a cheaper way to slug my barrel then spending $30 on the kit from Midway?
Thanks

Thanks they drop close to 311 so I will try that first with 2400. I just ordered a 311 size lee and a 309.
I got real lucky a friend gave me maybe 500 lbs lead they were crane weights. Went to Rotometal's to get 10lbs of tin. I am sure I will casting most everything I shoot from here on.

Again thanks

Leave at 311. No need to size smaller unless they will not chamber.
.311 is pretty much the std for .308 bores, altho some use .310 or even .309.

16 gr of 2400 is a great load in many cases. Also try 10 gr of Unique.

Good luck.

I've used the #311041 in my 30-30s, the .308 and the 30-06. So far the 30-30 loves it, the .308 is getting there and I'll get the 06 accurate eventually. At least it is cheap as dirt when you are trying to figure out the best loads. Keep good notes on what you cast and the loads you use, and you'll get it right in the end.

If your boolits drop out at .311 I'd size to .310 or leave as is and try them.

It's not NEEDED to slug the barrel but many do. On the other hand there are many out there who don't and have no idea what their barrel slugs at, and shoot lots of accurate boolits out of their rifles and pistols.

Slugging just helps you eliminate or control factors when trying to get some accuracy. For starters I'd leave the boolits at .311 and load and shoot some and then see what you get.

Great blt, even better when HP'd. Go with recommended sizing. I would start with as cast if they run .311 and see what you get, then try .310 for comparison. All of my 30's with the exception of my Swiss, want at least .310 or better. The Swiss wants .309. Good luck!

I shoot the 311041 in several of my '06s sized .3095 with 32 grains of 4895. I get groups as small as 1.25 inches at 100 yards. These are Springfields with scopes. I think you would be wise to size a little larger than .308. Slug your barrel and add .001.

What he said. LOL

My first mould was the 311041 and I bought for my 06. I'm in league with almost everyone else here: My plinker load is the harris load, 13 grains of red dot and my business load is 30 grains of IMR-4895.
My mould drops at .312" for it's fattest band. Currently I'm sizing .310" for my model 70 and .311" for my 03 and garand.

It was Fatnhappy that first lent me his 311041 mold. I still do appreciate that Dean. After useing it I bought one of my own but the workmanship on the newer Lyman molds has gone to hell. I am in the market for an older one that is in good shape. The Lyman I bought is a story unto itself. Maybe I'll post about it in another thread but after this mold I have to wonder if Lyman is haveing its molds made in China.

I wanted a 4 cavity mold at first. But that 311041 sure is fast to cast with. I cast up over 600 in a afternoon. I am using a 20/1 mix. Its another story installing the gas checks. it gets old fast pressing them suckers on. I got to agree the old molds I have got on E bay are all spot on.

I don't know about cheap as dirt. I have spent I don't know a gillion dollars. I keep telling my wife how much money I save. This reloading to save money sure is spendy. I bought over the last 5 years a Dillon 1050 650 square deal RCBS single stage who knows how many dies molds tin primers powder. Its been worth every penny. I cant think of a better way to spend a evening.

I wish I had found this forum sooner. I would have cast my own from the start. I must have 40 empty boxes from bear creek.

Thanks

Just cast some of your boolits from pure lead, and use a 1/4 rod from the hardware store to drive them back out of the bore. Use a small punch to drive them in. I'm going to assume you have a micrometer or a good digital caliper already. Don't know what all Midway's kit has in it, but I don't think I'd be spending $30 on any such thing.
