View Full Version : How Much Does a Bucket of WW weigh and other questions?

I'm going to make an offer on a bucket of wheel weights and I was wondering
what a full five gallon bucket would weigh (approximately). I read through the
thread about what the going price seems to be and I gleaned out of that thread
it is anywhere between free (nice) and $100 with about $30-$40 being the going
price. The other question is what kind of yield (again approximately) would one
expect from a five gallon bucket assuming 20-25% of it is Zinc/Stems/Nuts/Chew/etc
and 75% WW? I guess what I am asking is approximately what percent of the
WW's would yield lead ingots? All these answers I am asking I know are going to
be approximate at best but I thought I should at least have some idea of what
I am working with when trying to bargain for the bucket of WW.

Thanks,

Fug

I just converted 1/2 of a 5 gal bucket into 60 lbs of ingots. Probably another 10 lbs of stick ons put aside that I haven't melted yet. I think this may be on the high side because a high proportion of the weights were large in size.

I think the size of the WW make a difference. It seems like the larger they are on the average, more you get out of it, since the small weights still have the same size clip fastened to them.

+1

The smaller the weights, the more clips, therefore more loss, and the lighter the bucket will be.

A bucket should go from 125 to 150 pounds, depending on the size of the weights.
Figure about 15 to 20% loss for clips, trash, zinc and steel/iron weights, and burn-off.
With truck weights (big suckers) I usually only lose 10%, maybe a touch more.

+1 on the above. 150 is about right, +- depending on the size of the weights. Loss is 10-25%, with 18% about ave. Matt_G gets the same results I do. Now, if you are getting more zinc/steel weights your results could vary. In Wisconsin we don't have a lot yet. I would assume around Kali you would find more lately.

Wheel weights are getting very hard to get around here. I found a full 5 gallon bucket of mixed weights today and they said they would sell it for $40.00. I am going to get it anyway because this is the first I have found for sale.

My last buy was a 5 gal pale full to the top. It hit the scale to 152# at $.22 per lb. After it was turned into ingots there was 31# of assorted waist left. I'd also suggest that you bring a couple of extras pales with you. It makes moving them less strenuous,

I got 5 buckets yesterday from my local tire shop when I went in to get the wife car some new shoes, he always had given them to me with a smile but he kind of hemed and hawed a bit so I said how about $20 he had one of his guys load them for me.

I divided one bucket into 4 to unload I weight them and got a total of 147lb out of one bucket started melting them today and lost 19lbs between clips, junk, metal valve stems, steel and zink weights.

I hate them tiny WW what a waste of time melting them but i'm greedy and I do.

A friend starting collecting some ww around here and was told the local scape dealer only pays about 5 cents/lb for them although he sells them for 60.

I've been trying to convince a couple of shops to let me pay what the scrap yard pays, or more, and save them the trouble of taking them there themselves as well.

So far, no bites...

I bought 594 lbs. yesterday at 21 cents a pound. They were all sorted out from all the usual garbage at that price.

I just finished sorting the four buckets that I got last week. The yield after trash was 3 1/2 buckets. My full bucket of clip on weights weighs 156 lbs. A full bucket of stick on weights averages about 120 lbs, that because the stick ons are in a strip that is usually twisted and take up more room in the bucket for their size. It was my first time in acquiring WWs and the best part, It was Free! (thread here (http://www.castboolits.gunloads.com/showthread.php?t=50811))
