View Full Version : MiHec .45 Hollow point re-run

MiHec
03-30-2009, 10:36 AM
Hi,

All the time I get request for .452 (.453) molds.

So here is new thread.

Is there enough of you for re-run???

You can see the how it looks here

http://castboolits.gunloads.com/showthread.php?t=46544

The price is 85$ + shipping (I hope this is acceptable).

In the mean time I hope some one will review the mold from previous group buy

Miha,

You asked if $85.00 is acceptable, I would be more comfortable with $65.00 plus shipping.

That being said, that price is ok considering the turn around time you have and the excellent customer service you provide.

I hope you do rerun this mould. If you do I for one am interested.

I cannot let the opportunity go by to remind you of the interest in a .41 caliber hollow point mould.

Received both of mine today and cast a few, very nice even for a rookie hollow point caster.

Can only recommend this product, much better quality than a Lyman, equal I would say to a RCBS mould.

Mihec is a class act.

mine came today. Thing is beautiful!! if it cast anything like it looks it will be a sweetheart. This mold brings back the quality that rob applegate put into his molds. ONly thing i cant figure out is what was the little 3/4 in long pointed thing with a flange on it that came in the bag for?

Lloyd Smale
04-02-2009, 11:45 AM
figured it out its a lyman top punch for a lubesizer. Its been so many years since ive used a lyman that it never crossed my mind. Anyone standing on the sideline worrying about the quality of these molds id suggest you jump in and buy as many of them as you can while the price is this low. These molds are as nice as Applegates or ballistic cast at half the price.

If this bullet dropped at .454" and 230 grains with big fat lube grooves (big enough to make the bullet practical for black powder use), then I'd be interested.

I am a little confused with all the different threads on this. If it is for the 45 Hollowpoint I saw pictures of, them I am interested. 2Cavity Cramer style looks interesting. Might go for a single cavity if that is what is being offered. I looked on the group buy login but I don't see anything about this. In any case, I am interested.

This product by Mihec has been handled a little different than most group buys. In the first one we expressed interest in a thread like this. Once design was finalized and announced in the thread we emailed him confirming order than he emailed us payment info. We paid and he sent. I don't know if it will be handled differently in the future.

Well I love the first one so much .....I'm tempted.
I think I'll wait till all the details get worked out .....2 or 4 hole.
Are those pins reversible...so that it would also cast flat points?

The vent holes might be too big for guys who use lots of tin in the mix. I cast soft so it wasn't a problem with the single cavity mould. Looking forward to using the 2 cavity. This is a learning exercise for all of us, maybe the vent lines could be made smaller on the next set of moulds.

Awesome, can't wait to get it. The single cavity is just too slow.

BTW, I shot that 3 gun match last weekend with the .45 HP from your single mold and won first place in my division. Worked great, functioned flawlessly. Only issue I had is on one of the field courses I shot through a 4" tree branch that was in front of a target. Well, I tried to shoot the target and the tree branch jumped in the way effectively stopping the hollowpoint. Didn't have time to dig the bullet out, but it didn't make it to the target.

I had a standing order at Natchez for some handles and they emailed me on the 12th of May that they were in. Of course at that time I had told a guy here on the forum I would buy some of his so that's what I did. If Natchez in out of them again check with Shotman here who had a bunch.

Because Mihec GB's aren't like the other GB's, as it doesn't really have a honcho, just Mihec making moulds for the people who e-mailed him after "we" showed him there was enough interest. Mihec isn't even in charge of the posts, it is usually someone else who starts it so blame them, whoever they are. You have to follow these things a bit close, checking in every week or so may not cut it, but it really isn't that difficult.

Ask my thumbs.....

Ok.....

Few tips....

1. Mold needs to break in
2. Mold needs to break in
3.Drop some oil on pins and dry run them for few times on cold mold
4. Heat the mold and do some dry runs - pins must break in
5. Check if the hot mold is closing properly
6. If not - check for sharp edges (brush them off if there are some)
7. On this mold vent lines are big - smoke them if you are getting overflow
8. Use only wooden hammer as plastic or rubber will stick on hot pins
9. Check this link (http://mp-molds.com/index.php?pr=Cramer_style_casting)

If there are any questions, ask!

My mold was hanging on the pins. It seems that the mold halves are offset. I could see that both pins were hitting on the same sides in the off side block. I took a round file to it and it closed the gap. It now casts a little smaller than the first run. I measured 4 spots and I got readings of .4525 to,4552. I can catch the offset with the molds closed at the base with my thumb nail. Not sure how far they are offset. They seem to size up OK but you can tell by the the way they look that the mold is not quite aligned. I think they will still shoot OK at the short range they will be used for. It might be more of a concern with the 44 mold MiHec is doing next.

Mihec,

I had same problem as DAFzipper. Mold halves were slightly offset. Pins fit great into either half, but because the mold halves did not quite match up, the mold would not close. I sanded away one side of the channel for the pins on the offside mold half, till it would close. Now it closes good, but there is light showing around the pins opposite to where I sanded (because of the offset). Hopefully that will not flash. I haven't had a chance to cast yet. Hopefully bullets will not be very out of round. Mold is not offset very much, but hard to say how much.

Springfield

Sanding seems to make it work fine, and I did not get any finning after the correction. It is not the pins, just a slight mis alignment of the mould halves.

Check this....

After seeing the posts about the molds not closing fully I have examined mine and it has the same problem.

With the pins removed the mold closes fully. I like DAFzipper can catch the edge of the misaligned halves with my fingernail at the boolit base. This with the pins removed.

The mold half oppsite the sprue is forward slightly when the mold is held with the sprue plate to the right.

Miha would the misalignment be correctable by using fine emery around a round jeweler's file and working on the alignment bushing away from the sprue pivot?

It seems that if the left half is moved to the rear (away from the sprue pivot) This will allow the cavities to properly align with the pins in place. Thus eleminating the gaps.

I would estimate the misalignment to .0001 perhaps less.

BTW the pins fit both halves perfectly..........

If you remove material from the alignment pins to allow the mould half to move it seems to me you will just have a sloppy fit, unless I am misunderstanding the procedure.

I think that the pins will serve to complete the final alignment with this modification. I am proposing to remove very little from the side opposite the sprue pivot.

DAFzipper
06-18-2009, 06:58 AM
Checked mold alignment without the pins. Still offset. Like I said before, I'll have to shoot some to see how much of a problem it is. Sanding the alignment pins sounds like a bad idea to me, but maybe it would work for a mold that is offset less than mine.

Springfield
06-18-2009, 07:34 AM
DAF: I think the bullet will shoot perfectly well, as even with the misalignment, the bullet is perfectly balanced. Kinda like an airplane propeller. As long as the weight is exactly opposite. It's not as if all my LEE molds are perfectly aligned!

Mine closes without the cramer pins. They seem too big. Will the thermal expansion with heating up the mould make it worse?

If anything the brass will expand more than the steel pins and make it better. It certainly didn't get worse with mine when heated.

If anything the brass will expand more than the steel pins and make it better. It certainly didn't get worse with mine when heated.

Thats right

It seems to me I used tolerance which is too high.

For next mold i will have that in mind

There is no problem if you use sand paper (fine sand paper) and open up the HP seats. Be slow on this process and try the pins several times.

Springfield
06-18-2009, 04:22 PM
Miha: It's tough making the perfect bullet mould, but you have come dang close! My single cavity from you is perfect. I'd rather have to do a little hand fitting than try and make up for a sloppy mould.

KennethF
06-18-2009, 05:50 PM
My new mould had space between the halves when they were closed.

I have 3M sand paper with a sticky back, 220 grit, 3" wide roll. I selected a drill bit that is smaller diameter than the HP seat and glue a 2" x 5/16" piece of the sand paper to the drill bit. I take the HP pins out of the mould and smoke each half of the mould block in the pin seats. Place the pins back into the mould and close the mould halves to reveal where brass needs to be removed for a better fit of the pins in the seats. Take the pins out of the mould and remove very little brass where the pins rubbed the smoke off of the seats. Install the pins in the mould and close the mould to see if the space between the mould halves is thinner now. I repeat this untill there is no space between the blocks. When the mould is closed tight there is no movement of the pins, they are a tight fit in the seats.

My mould works great, boolits measure .453 and hollow points look excelent.

MiHec, when are you going to start a new group buy for us 45 shooters who missed out on the previous buys? I am ready to add my name to the list. I do think that there should be a change to the HP hole bottom. The image shows a flat, sharp shouldered bottom. Experience has shown that a round bottom hole HP is less prone to fragment as it mushrooms. The sharp corner sets up stress risers and it breaks there. In discussion with one of the expert bullet designers, he was telling me that the best HP was a .250 meplat, .180 mouth, 7 degree taper, .300 deep, with a rounded bottom. How does that compare to your design?

I made over 500 hollowpoints yesterday... mine come out at 0.453"- 0.454" and weigh 200 grains. The outboard pin is too tight but I'm going to reverse it and run the mold with one of each style in the future.

Great Mold! My 45's are going to love this boolit; Thank you for a great product Miha,
