View Full Version : Cast shot from Capt Morgan

I've been conversing with Capt Morgan and he seems to be willing to create - that is design, test and produce moulds to cast round balls for shot or whatever. His first question to me was "What do you think of .380 (#0000?) buck as a starter?"

I replied that I thought .308-.314, .320-.325, .355-.359 would be much better choices - in my opinion.

He says making a single caliber (diameter) mould is easier than making a 2 dia mould is easier than making a 3 diameter mould and I can't remember if 4 was impossible or just a nearly unresonable request.

If any of ya'll are interested, feel free to chime in and name the diameter(s) of your preference.

He will join in here with more information than I can possibly remember - I think.

your sizes sound good to me Bob 314 would be an interest for me and I've already got a single rb for 323 would be interested in a mold with more holes in a 325. A 38 cal would be nice also.

I use #4 buck a lot. It patterns much better than any of the larger sizes (which I have commercial molds for). A multi-cavity mold for it would be very welcome.

The mold project so far:

The molds will be made from aluminum. Size will be 1.25 x 2 x 2.36" The molds will have two integrated conical guide pins - no sprue plate. The molds will be made to accept RCBS handles.

The molds will have two multi-cavities. You can choose from one to four different sizes of buck in the same mold. If you use a two-size mold, you can choose to cast only one on size at the time, but if you go for more than two, you'll have to separate the sizes after casting.

The numbers of pellets depends on the size, of course.

#0000 = 18 pellets
#00 = 20
4B = 28

The max number of possible sizes will be four for the time being. I aim for a roundness of +/- .0015"

A full cast of #0000 will be around 1800 grains, so you'll need a bottom pour pot (or a really large ladle) Please check that your pot has at least two full inches of clearance under the sprue.

I haven't settled on a final price yet, probably between 50-60 bucks, depending on the number of molds. I'm afraid a minimum of ten molds is necessary to recoup the tooling, material and shipping. No payment up front - once the order is finished, the honcho, Bob? transfer the money, and I ship the goods.

I have yet to make the necessary tooling and cut a test mold, but once the details have been agreed upon, the molds should be ready for shipping in a couple of months.

I would be interested in a mould also. Not sure which sizes at this point but that can worked out later. I can use OO for sure, OOOO may be fun out of a 38-55 for chasing cans.

Cap'n, I'd be interested in a 00 and maybe a #4. Let me know when you get going on them and know a price. Count me in though.

Jan and all,
May I suggest that that a younger, healthier, more aggressive person be the "honcho" here. By aggressive I mean, when things happen - make things complete. Take the order, collect the funds, forward the funds, accept the shipment, and SHIP the moulds PDQ.

Volunteers? I will, but I think there are much better choices!

Well, seems like a pattern begins to emerge...

It looks as if the sizes .360 .325 .314 and 4B (.240) are the most popular.

I did a bit of drafting and it will be possible to cut a .380 cavity using the .360 tool. This is done by helical interpolation and the cavity will not be a perfect sphere, but the theoretical out-of-round will be less than .0005.

I aim to have the molds dropping the pellets to the nominal sizes listed above +.0 - .002. Shrinkage will normally vary between 0.5% for hard alloy to 1% for pure lead. I will calculate for a shrinkage of 0.75% when making the tooling.

Next step will be a test mold in .360 to get an idea of how small a sprue gate I can get away with and still have a complete fill. If necessary I'll add vent lines to one of the mold halves.

Well Capt'n...you requested a 10 mould minumum to justify set-up and shipping cost and it looks like you could be makin moulds for a while. Possibly over-run with business:mrgreen:

Sure appreciate you doing these for us:drinks:.

Me and my big mouth! :-D

The layout of the different shot sizes are finished. I plan to have a test mold ready after Easter. If the sprue gate design works as I hope, the pellets should snap clean off - even with pure lead. Should it fail, a curved toenail cutting plier would likely do a good job.

We still need a volunteer for the honcho position. My plan was to have those interested in a mold send me a PM with their address + an email address, and details on the mold(s) they want. I'll confirm each order with the recipient, and mark the molds to avoid any mix-ups. Once the molds are done I'll ship them to the honcho, and mail him the list of the recipients. Fair enough?

The price will be $50,- for a one-size mold and 60 for a multi-size.

Looks like I joined the party a little late to be asking, but I guess I'll ask anyway. Any possibility of getting one in 0.410" ball? Casting with the two cavity RCBS is pretty slow for the rate I burn through 410-bore slug loads.

How does the Honcho pay for the shipping? How much would shipping be in total? Looks like we would have to pay for shipping from Denmark and then from the Honcho to ourselves?

With the number of molds we have by now, the shipping from Denmark to US will be covered by the mold prize. A 10kg package (30 molds) will cost around $140.

At $50.00 for a single size, $5.00 for shipping from Denmark, $5.00 for USPS Small Flate Rate Box (from Honcho to purchaser), plus confirmation and insurance - we are looking at a total price per mould of right at $62.00 each. Add $10.00 for multi-size and it still looks like a terrific deal to me.

Put me down for a #4b and nominal .314.

Bob

Edit:Hmmmmm... I just got a PM from Wes (freedom475) stating that Jan (Cap'n Morgan) that he had volunteered to Honcho this GB and that Jan was happy with that and I am certainly happy with that choice!

Wes noticed that Jan had included the shipping to the US will be included in the price of the mould - assuming 30 moulds are ordered. I would hope that a smaller number of orders could be handled if we pay the shipping costs?
This is my last "official" post - I am happy to assist Wes in his capacity as Honcho.

May I suggest that all commitment and request PMs to Cap'n Morgan be "copied" to freedom475 to help prevent confusion?

Okay, it looks as if we reached the goal of ten molds... and then some.

A couple of members volunteered for the honcho position, I asked Wes (freedom475) to handle the job,as he has previous experience with selling to members in here.

I'm closing the group buy at 30 molds. Those of you interested, please send a PM to our honcho, Wes (freedom475) with the details. The sizes will be as follows:

#0000 = .380
#000 = .360
#00 = .325
#0 = .314
4B = .24

Please state the number of molds and the pellet sizes for the each mold. e.g.:
One single mold #00
One double-mold #000 + 4B
One triple mold #000 + #00(+2) + 4B (for a total of four columns of pellets)
(I'll email or PM you with a confirmation)

Once I have orders for 30 molds in my inbox I will ask Wes to close the buy.

Updates and pictures as the project moves forward will be served on non-regular basis :drinks:

I am calling this the feeler thread. It appears that 30 moulds will be possible so please direct your orders to the thread..."Capt'n Morgan's Buckshot Mould GB Starts Here"

I have asked Ken to close this thread.
