I bought the Lyman cast bullet book hoping it would have more 30.30 loads than it does. Anyway, I was wondering what/where is a good source for the rifle loads using pistol powder. I am looking for plinking loads using 2400, 231, Unique etc with 150 to 170+ grn boolits. I know 10- 14 grns of 2400 is a good recommended load.
I have seen some other loads scattered through out some posts but I can never find them when I need them.

Thanks,

Bigscot

The older Lyman manuals have more data than the present ones, Specifically no. 45. Try 10.0 gr. of Unique.

...............Using the REAL fast pistol powders like Bullseye, PB, W231, I'd start at 5.0grs. May give you what you want right there. Obviously you're not trying to knock anything over or kill anything, right? Just a fun light load?

The fast pistol/shotgun powders pack an amazing amount of energy per grain, so if you have a mind to work up, do it a grain at a time and check the usual pressure indicators.

One time I had paper patched up a bunch of Lyman 452190 swc pistol boolits to shoot in a 45-70 (no particular reason, just had the time and inclinaiton). I had just gotten done loading up a couple when a buddy drove up. We decided to go out to the field at the end of the house to shoot'em. I'd used 8.0grs of Red Dot as a load.

About 20 yards from the gate was an old dead Mulberry tree stump that was as hard as cast iron. I know 'cause I was always running over it with the disc and it never fased it. Seemed a likely target. My friend went first and must have hit it a glancing blow. It made a solid 'WHACK' and you could hear the slug as it went racing through the weeds. At the edge of the field was a hogwire fence maybe 40 yards off.

The fence went TING! as the slug hit it, there was a bit of dust as it crossed the driveway and then another TING! sound as it hit the neighbor's chainlink fence, and a couple puffs of dust as it skipped like a rock out across their field. Cool!

So I loaded up the other one and paid special attention to hit the stump square on. I did, with another good solid SMACK! It made a neat 1/2" sized hole in that rockhard dead wood. I stuck in a piece of straw and I guessed it penetrated about 3". I was impressed as I imagine you'd have played hell to drive a nail into that stump.

I have a Lyman Cast Bullet Handbook dated 1973 that has many pistol/shotgun powder loads with 700X, Red Dot, Unique etc. Some of the newer fast powders are not represented however. Maybe your library could come up with one of these older manuals. Quantrill

Might want to check out the data from Greg Mushial. He worked with Oregon Trails to develope it. http://www.gmdr.com/

Buckshot,

Yes, I am just wanting to make up some plinkers without using large quantities of rifle powder. I have been using 32 gns of I-4350 but if I can use alot less of some other powder then I would be happy. Plus I might be able to participate in more group buys on moulds. Which I am not too good at passing up by the way.

Thanks,

BS

You might want to consider surplus 820, I am finding it is very accurate in my 30-30 with 150 -180 gr boolits. 10 1/2 grs with the RCBS 150 cowboy boolit is super at a 100 yrds,11 1/2 gr with the Saeco 316 same deal ,same for 12 1/2 gr. with the Saeco 305, no fillers, just load and shoot I use the CCI 300 primer.

The RCBS book says 10 to 12 grs unique with their 150 gr boollit,

and 15 to 17 gr. 2400 with a 175 gr boolit.

The Lyman # 48 says 14.5 to 19 gr. 2400 with the 041, and 7 to 10.6 gr unique with the same 041.

good luck

In my 30-30 I use the RCBS Cowboy mold (150 Gn no gascheck) in front of 10 grains of bluedot. I panlube the boolits with spg.

Its very nice, accurate to 100 for paper and no recoil. Its a great plinker and even better since I have lots-o-bluedot:)
