sorry in advance if this is the wrong spot to post this.
i have some stuff i want to try to sell here.
what exactly is a flat rate box?
what is the shipping cost?
how much weight can you put in them?
does it matter where in the lower 48 you ship it?
will that change the cost?
i would just like to know before i post stuff for sale that "includes shipping".
dont want to screw myself on cost.
some of the stuff is kinda heavy.
thanks again everyone

There are a few sizes of Flat Rate box.

This is from the USPS website:

Priority Mail Flat Rate Envelope $4.95 12-1/2" x 9-1/2"
Priority Mail Small Flat-Rate Box $4.95 8-5/8" x 5-3/8" x 1-5/8"
Priority Mail Regular Flat-Rate Box (FRB1) $10.35 11" x 8-1/2" x 5-1/2"
Priority Mail Regular Flat-Rate Box (FRB2) $10.35 13-5/8" x 11-7/8" x 3-3/8"
Priority Mail Large Flat-Rate Box (Domestic Addresses) $13.95 12-1/4" x 12-1/4" x 6"
Priority Mail Large Flat-Rate Box (APO/FPO Destinations) $11.95 12-1/4" x 12-1/4" x 6"

Max weight is 70 lbs, but I have found that if you load more than 50lbs in one they tend to get "misplaced" or worse yet emptied but still delivered.

Lastly, for the boxes, what you put in them must actually fit in the box. They will not accept items that deform the box.

Edit: Ok, last thing, the rates apply to ANYWHERE in the US (including Alaska and Hawaii)

USPS flat rate priority mail boxes come in several sizes. The one I use the most is about 9"x12"x6" and costs about $9 to take up to 70 pounds to anywhere in the US, including Hawaii and Alaska.

Go to the PO, get a selection of boxes, and the current prices.

The box will say "Flat Rate" on it and it looks just like the other boxes so make sure. Usually they have them out front but if not ask the Mail clerk. They don't seem to advertize them too much almost like they don't want to use them but they are a good deal for small heavy items.

question.....
do they charge you for the envelope or box, or is that included in the shipping cost?

Go to USPS.GOV and create a user account and you can order boxes and envelopes free, delivered to your door.

If you create your shipping labels online at USPS, it saves you a few cents and lets you print the labels ready to go. If you get emails from your purchasers and enter that info as well, they get shipping updates. I have found when shipping lead using pre-paid labels allows me to pull up behind my PO and ring the bell and just drop off the boxes. No waiting in line with 60# boxes in my arms...

By all means, get a selection of flat rate boxes from the clerk, then go online and order the ones you want in bulk. They come in 10 or 20 packs delivered, all for free. They used to send you Priority Mail tape that fit tape guns for free, too. I guess that was abused...

The Flat Rate Envelope will handle any of these items. I have stuffed one of those - and I mean STUFFED - AND IT WENT LIKE A CHAMP/

Good luck ordering the boxes online. I made that mistake and delivery of boxes went on forvever. I mean tons of the stuff. The local PO was laughing like hell as I kept returning the excess shipments to them.
