Clint, I believe current law permits you to ship a firearm to a family member, or yourself, without an FFL. Used to be able to, anyway.

I bought a rifle in Oregan and was told it had to go to a ffl holder or a gunsmith. Looking back I wish I would have shipped it to john doe gunsmithing with my adress. FB

Mail it to yourself at his address. Let it sit in the package for a couple of weeks when it gets there just incase they want to check up on it.
I've mailed guns to my self for hunting in SE rather than do the paperwork hassles about taking them thru Canada.
