At the range yesterday I tested some 30 30 cartridges composed of Lyman 311291 (170 gr rn), in front of 28 gr. IMR 4895. I was getting around 1925 fps, with fairly good accuracy at 50 yards, ( in a Marlin 336). I fired some Remington Core-lockd 170 gr. and they were getting around 2150 fps. When I got back home to check on maybe reducing the load for slower velocity I couldn't find any reference to 4895 under the 30 30 cartridge in the Lyman book! Neither could I find it in the Cast Bullet Handbook. I'm just wondering where I got this load data, and whether it is safe or not. I saw no sign of overpressure in the spent cases, and had no extraction problems. Usually I go with Lymans Handbook, but evidently, not this time. Anybody else load the 30 30 with 4895? Thanx. Chris

You probably got it from the old IMR data or from Hodgdon's if you're using the "H" version. You can verify your numbers on their web site although they seem to think 1600 fps is the maximum for cast. I'd bet real money pressures of the hand loads do not exceed that of the factory and if there are no other ill effects like leading, it sounds like you have good load to begin fine tuning with.

If it is IMR-4895 that load is listed on Reloader's Reference loaded under the RCBS 308-180-SP.
There is also an old Handloader issue(#233) with similar data. Their data says 27.0gr under a 175gr NEI 43 175.308 GC for 1715fps.

28 grains is also a good start in the 308 you mighta got it from that.

Maybe you got it from Chapter 10 of Lee #2? It shows up to 29 grains of H4895 with 170 grain cast.

There's been so many articles in magazines using 4895 with cast bullets in the 30-30 over the years along with the metioned publications that it has pretty much become a standard load for the 311041, 311291 and similar bullets in the 30-30. I've recommended that load as a standard load for the 30-30 and as a starting load in the .308, 7.65, .303, 7.62x54, 30-40, 30-06 and the 8x57 with similar weight cast bullets (170-190 gr) with GCs. The 30-30 doesn't need a dacron filler with that load but all the others benifit from it.
