i just found a place near me that has promp powder under $80 for 8#. i know this is the same weight wise as red dot. i load for 22hornet, 7x57, 308, and 45/70 in a sharps repro. could i use this with boolits in any of these?

Is the density of Promo similar to Red Dot? One of the reasons I like (and use) Red Dot so much is its' greater bulk compared to similar powders.

from what i understand you use the same load data as red dot.

i guess i should have stated my question a different way: "can i use red dot in 22 hornet, 7x57, 308, or 45/70"?

13 grains in the 308. I don't know about the 45/70 that is a big case for a powder that fast.

I use promo instead of red dot in cast rifle boolits. 7.65, 308 and 30-06. BY WEIGHT.

I believe it is more dense than Red Dot. Alliant tells shot shell loaders to go 2 bushing sizes smaller than what they use for Red Dot to get the same charge weight.

I bought some Promo for use in my shotgun and in that venue I see differences from Red Dot. I have used Red Dot for over 30 years so I've had some experience with it.
1. I recently had some bloopers with it in very cold weather(15-20 F.) loaded in Federal hulls with Federal Wads. This has never happened with RD.
2. At other times in taper wall hulls (AA , STS etc) I have seen fire coming out the side of my 390 Beretta Auto when the bolt opens. Again this has never happened with RD. It does happen in various autos with some lots of Remington promotional ammo.
When this keg is gone I'll go back to Red Dot.

Thanks, Fecmech. I have wondered about that for some time, not seriously enough to do a lot of research though. Saving money would be nice, but I think I'll just stick with RD.
