Hello everyone.
I was wondering if anyone has used SR4759 in their 38 Special. I presently use it in my 357 and it is unbelievably accurate and prefer to keep using it. I looked in many manuals so far as well as online with no load data to be found. I am using a 150 gr L-SWC boolit. I figure that if it is this accurate in 357, it should be accurate in 38 since I'll be using it in the same gun. The data I have for 357 is 10 - 14gr of 4759. Would it be safe to start with about 7gr in 38? Any help greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

SR4759 is a rifle powder. I don't recall ever seeing loads for a 38 SPL. I use it in 7TCU and 7BR.

Just curious, where did you get your data?? I've seen 4227 listed in several books, but not 4759. 4227 is slower than 4759 though. Slowest I've seen for the .38 special is 2400.

I use SR4756 in 38's and 357's,to name a few.Might that be the powder you're talking about?

I do have SR4756 and use it too. I am talking about SR4759. I know it is a rifle powder (I use it in 30-30 & 308) but I found data in my Lyman cast handbook. The data was for a 357 Mag 158gr boolit (10-14gr) but the data worked well for a 150gr in my gun. That's why I was just wondering if anyone tried it in their 38.

Lyman cast boolit book has loads for 357 Mag with SR 4759. I have never tried it, but at the upper end I seem to remember decent Mag velocities.

I'm interested in an answer to this question as I picked up a pound for $10 recently. So far I am considering it for a cast boolit load for my 257 Wby., but can find no load data for that either. I have found a load for 7MM Mag which may give a reference point to determine a load. DALE

I know this is an old thread but was looking for others that used 4759.

I tried 10grs of SR-4759, 158 SWC in 38-special cases today, shooting them in a S&W 19 357 mag. They showed promise and I will try some .357 mag cases with it as well. I did not chronograph it so I'm not sure where its at.

The reason I like 4759 is the way the pistol recoils, hard to explain but fast sight recovery.

Originally Dupont listed loads with 4227 for 38 and 357. It worked ok, but it took a fair amount of it. That 's ok because the loading density was good. Not too economical though. Using 4759 is ok; yes its a bit faster so a reduction in the loading is a prudent way to start the development. 7 graims is a good point to start and then work up in increments of .2 grain. You have to watch the grouping and see what prints the tightest. If it isn't happening by 9 grains then you have to consider that you are approaching the lower recommendation for .357 and that would be a +P loading in the 38 special which translated into recoil would make it a bit warm for target shooting. My Speer manual #10 shows a loading for 38 special with Blue Dot which is substantially faster than 4759....for the 158 grain swc or round nose.....6.3 grains giving 868 fps and 6.9 grains giving 956fps which is right for the 38 so you definitely won't get into trouble with the 7 grain load of the slower 4759. Good shooting. LLS
