Taking advantage of the weight needed to keep it subsonic, do you think a meplat like this would feet through an AR? I mean, if you're gonna be slow, you might as well be fat (at least in front)!

Why don't you see if you can get access to a few 311440's ( original size and weight ) and see if they will feed ?

If they won't feed , seems it would cast a lot of shadows on anything else with that profile.

What twist would you need to stabilize something like that? I see problems, big problems.

Not sure Bret, but the cartridge was designed for subsonic work, so I would imagine that the twist rate would be compatible. Guess I need to go check and make sure.

I game my neighbor some RCBS180fn and he liked the results in a whisperer.

I don't know the twist rate thing very well, but I'm betting you're going to have to go pretty quick to stabilize what amounts to a 240 gr 30 cal wadcutter at subsonic speeds.

That should be just about the same length as the 311284. If nobody offers on this post, try posting in the Boolit Trading subforum under Swapping& Selling for some of those. That'll tell you if it'll be stable at reachable velocities. It'll probably feed better than an extended 311440 will, though. IIRC, most Whispers have about an 8" twist.

an 8 twist is the standard 300 Whisper twist for firing 240 grain bullets through a suppressor at sub sonic velocities.

Might work. As has been pointed out, that would approximate a 311284. Get a few and see how they shoot. If it's a go, then make one.

Any machinist can take a 311284 and open the nose all the way through at .300-.302 (whatever the original nose diameter is. Then cut a plug with a 311440 nose profile and install it. A little slop in the bottom plate (which will have to be added will allow the bullet to release.

See Castpics/ Articles/ Mould from Hell for ideas how to make one. I took a Lyman 358315 and made a mould with a 440 nose profile that is adjustable. Then we made an adjustable HP punch with the same profile. Essentially an adjustable weight 3589/358009/HP. Works really well at 240 grains in my .35 Remington./beagle

Okay, that might work then. I was thinking the more traditional 1/12 type thing. Aren't you going to have to throat the barrel?

Looking at my RCBS 309-200-SIL that casts at 210 grains makes me think I'll try that boolit first. I wonder if there is a good site dedicated to loading the Whisper?
