At the very least, a .45-70 would blow a half-inch hole through a deer lenghtways, regardless of the alloy. If that won't put one down, you need a .470 NE! Seriously, the wheelweights are probably hard enough for 45-70 velocities unless you're loading up for a Ruger #1 or similar modern style gun with elephant gun level velocities. If necessary, you can always water drop the slugs for additional hardness. I haven't cast rifle boolits in years, but I assume these will be gas checked.

They will be gas checked. The reason i asked the qeustion is that there seems to be alot of mythical magical vodoo out there about casting bullets. Personally with 400grs. of anything reasembling a bullet moving 16 to 1800 F.P.S hitting a deer size animal it should to the job. A round ball has killed alot of game in history. Thanks for the reply.

Well they worked for me The last pic is the entrance hole. I'm using a 464gr fp with a milpat of .35 at about 1600fps.[smilie=1::Fire:

I use a gas checked 405 grain for my 45-70 made from WW and I assure you it will put any deer in this country down

You could always add a little tin to help fill out the molds better.

Depends if you want to spend the extra money on solder to have purty boolits though.

I cut my WW by 50% with range scrap and have no issues with pushing my 340 gr boolits up to over 2000 fps. Haven't gotten a chance to smack a deer with one, but they will sure mess up a 35 to 40 lb coyote.

Best wishes from the Boer Ranch,
