First time casting today made about 200 .45 255 swc from a RCBS mold. I used Wheel Weights + about 2% tin. Bullets are beautiful and wrinkle free. Now the problem. bullets average weight for ten are 264.3 grains. I was really suprised when i miked them and found that they average .4565. Will the sizing die take care of this? The mold is supposed to throw a .454 dia. Anyone offer advice to a newbie? Thanks

The weight does not surprise me, the size is a little big, are you sizing to 454? If so, should be no problem, if 452 might be a squeeze, but still in all a much better problem than having one of the undersized Lyman 452424's they are putting out now. If in fact you are sizing to 452, you might consider sizing to 454 first then to 452.

+1 on what heavy Lead says about sizing in steps. Less strain on you and the equipment.

I am going to size to .454. What concerns me is the fact that i dropped them in water right from the mold. Is this a problem?

Nope!

DGV,

Welcome to the forum.

Your water dropping them did no harm and didn't change their size.

.454 should clean them up nicely and not be difficult to do. Just out of curiosity, what are you shooting them out of?

Shooting a Ruger Bisley with a 5 1/2" barrel. Yes, a Convertible. Fast becoming my favorite gun. Cylinder throats are .452 exactly. Was worried about shootin a oversized bullet through it.

you should be fine sizing them.

+.002-.003 is fine through most guns. You'll get the occasional odd duck that wants exact throat size, but overall what we think of as oversize apparently isn't. A little spray lube will make the boolits size easier. Be happy you got a "fat" mould. Guys pay extra for them. And remember- just because a manufacturer says the mould throws ".454" doesn't mean it will with your alloy. Almost never happens.
