I bought a new double cavity Lyman 452424- 255 gr. for the 45 Colt or in my case a Ruger Blackhawk chambered for the Colt. Anyway, I casted up some boolits with it today. I used straight wheelweights, air-cooled. I was checking them just now and the diameter is like .450"- .451". I need .452" after sizing. Tell me I've got a bad mould????? Would the straight wheelweights shrink that much?? If so, I guess I'll have to start looking for a used .454" mould.

Slinger I hate to tell you this but you might as well send it back and get your money back, don't even bother to ask for another as I believe you will have the same experience I did. This last year I ordered one, it was misaligned badly and cast a .451 on the fat side to .447 on the small side. Sent it in and they replaced with one that cast round, but it cast a .449 boolit. It's still here, I used it for a parts mould. Oh the sprue was so rough it would not even drop the sprue.
I would return it where you bought it from and get a RCBS 45255swc or a 45270SAA IMO.
Good Luck, at least you know it's not you.

Well, I wasted my time flattening the sprue plate then. I doubt that the company I bought it from will will take it back. I don't believe that you can't rely on old established companies to provide you with a quality product. I'm calling Lyman tomorrow................

Slinger;
Let us know how that conversation goes.
I have gotten to the point that if it ain't right the minute it comes out of the box I'm done! If I've bought it local it goes right back if I bought it by mail I make a call.
A little cleaning and deburring is one thing but bent sprue plates out of the box? No way!
You should never have to fix new!

Slinger, I bought a new lyman 452664 had the same problem sent to lyman came back undersized just like it left. I returned it to midway and ordered 454190. It casts perfect but I might not feel that way if I was sizing for an older colt. Every other lyman mould I have bought was perfect but they definately have some under sized 45 cherries. I agree with HM go rcbs in 45.

They'll make it right.........I might just tell them to replace it with another caliber, like 44 mag or 38/357. I was going to order two new Lyman moulds, but I'm gonna wait & see how they handle this. Stuff like this ticks me off. Now I've got to put up with the inconvenience & aggravation of sending it back & waiting........

Lyman quality has gone down the drain. I found that out with the recent 454190 that I bought. I had Blammer draw me a imp 454190 drawing and sent it to Hoch moulds in Roswell,NM. At this time RCBS is the only mold maker that still is making a good product in that price range.

Your right about there quality. I bought a 311284 lyman mold and the
bullets came out at two different sizes, both to small. Called them and
sent it back for replacement. Received the new one, and it was the same
way. At least both cavities droped the same size..... .309
I've had it with Lyman molds.

Well,I talked to a lady @ Lyman. She told me to write a letter and explain all in detail, including my comment about other customers from this website being unhappy with the moulds and the replacements being as bad as the original. So, that's what I'll do. I'm also going to tell them not to send a mould that is undersized. She said that with the elections, everybody in the world wants to cast their own bullets (Fear & Panic). She said they can't keep up with demand. That explains QC problems. So, I'll see what happens.

If they would invest in a new cherry, me thinks the problem would be over, and much more efficeint to put the product out once than too put in out twice or more and still have a mad customer. Only one that likes it is the post orifice.

put me on the list of unhappy people too.
it is bullcrap that they are saying "we are too busy to make a good product".
my hell ,there are people looking for work, hire a couple.
and if business is so good they certainly can afford to make/buy some new properly sized cherries.

The toolmaker's aren't in charge... salesmen and bean counters run all the businesses these days. Quality and customer service are oxymoron's in the MBA world.
