45 70 load ????

Well i found a few pounds of accurate 1680 in my basement and it says it is good for intermediate straight walled cartriges can i use it in a 45 70 under a 405 or 300 grn boolit

if so what was your load and your opinion on it.

This is in a marlin xlr stainless 24" barrlel rifle.

Accurate doesn't list any loads for it in the 45-70 so I wouldn't.

I'm with Wayne.

One of my books shows mainly AA for lead, none of the loads list 1680.

1880 is a ball powder that was made for cases like the 7.62X39. Being a ball powder it is not good to load it with a lot of air space in the shell. I would not use it in a 45-70. Works good in cartridges like the 7.62X39, M1 Carbine and 44 mag.

Hornady will email you its loading data for the xlr ammo and 1680 is shown giving the highest velocity for 45-70 and 450. If they are willing to put it in print it should be o.k. if used wisely.

For your safety an for those around you, please make it a habit to use PUBLISHED data for your handloads. Using a forum such as this as your sole source of data can get you in trouble. All it takes is someone accidentally transposing characters as they type (and I'm surely guilty of this) and you may end up with a small bomb instead of a handload.

That having been said, you can find some useful loading info here. Just be sure to check it against published standards before using it. Go buy three handloading manuals, if you don't already have them, so you have a variety of tested loads to check. Firearms in the same caliber are not necessarily identical. Then there's variances in primers, powder lot variations and the capacity of the cartridges used for the testing.

Bottom line: Be careful and double check your load data.

Well figured out what to do with the powder Get rid of it.

No not with a cannon fuse that is for the 1/4 pound of black more fun right?

Actually sold it alang with some other stuff i had no use for.
