[smilie=w: The GB molds I ordered from Lou got here and are beautiful. Thanks Lou. Has anyone here loaded either of these boolits in an 1895G. I really want to develop an accurate load with soft lead for this rifle. I love whacking deer with this gun and the idea of smacking one with a 545 gr boolit already has me thinking deer season.

A bullet that heavy will not fit in the magazine unless you seat the slug really deep. Then You will run into pressure problems. The Marlin works best with bullets of 400 gr and less. If you want to single load you can use your heavy slug. I have used a 535 gr SACO slug in my Marlin but it would not work in the magazine so was single loaded. By the way trying to eject an unfired round is difficult with a boolit that long.

Seating a 500 to 550 grain bullet in a 45/70 or 450 Marlin really is no problem. The bullet will probably be approximately 1.28 to 1.3 inches in length, the nose to crimp groove length shouldn't be longer than .45 inches - that will make your OAL at 2.550 providing your case is trimmed to 2.1 - this round will function just as smooth as any manufactured cartridge on the market IMHO. You can send these puppies downrange at 1,500fps from a Guide Gun if you enjoy recoil or you can back off the throttle a bit. At full throttle you will still be within SAAMI pressure limitations. Beartooth (525 grain) and J.B. Young (550 grain) make bullets for resale that work just fine in my 450 Marlin. J.B. Young (bullet name Crater) is just a tad shorter relative to nose to crimp grove than the Beartooth (bullet name Pile-Driver), which is just a tad shorter than .45 inches. Beartooth's website has some reloading info if you want to look at it.

I see Beartooth gives one load with 4895 that does 1820 out of a 22" with the 525 For those that like a little kick, that ought to pleasure 'em. I once loaded the Lee 500+ grain bullet to 1635 out of one of the Encore 15 inch unported pistol barrels. Although I'm not too sensitive to recoil, that surpassed the fun factor.

Granted , the heavier ( longer ) the bullet , the further it sticks into the case .

But , if the powder charge is adjusted accordingly , I cna not think why this would produce excessive pressure ?

Heavier bullets use a reduced powder charge ( compared to lighter powder charged ) , this is SOP . Stat at min to be safe , & work up .

Now , why anyone needs that heavy a bullet for North America , I do not know ?

God bless

There are several ranchs here in Nebraska that offer Buff hunts. I think 540 grn would be about right

Measure the as cast bullets . Marlins like at least .460" bullets .

I use the 525 grain BTB and have used the 550 Crater in my Guide Gun.My load now for the 525 grain is 37 grains of RL-7 in Starline Brass with CCI#34 primers for 1515fps in the Guide Gun..

The heavier bullets like the 525 and 550 grain don't recoil as much as lighter bullets do.It is more of a push than the snap a 425 grain at 1850 fps causes. They are really fun to shoot.

Sure about that? Mine slugs and shoots .459 and so did GooseGestapo's loads. Go check out GooseGestapo, he's got the right idea.

I shot a medium sized whitetail doe this year with a 405 grain bullet, from my 1895. The range.....ummmm, errrr, aaaaa ...12 feet. Not a lot of tracking was involved. Tom
