The 44spl can be used in the 44 magnum, but not the other way around. Just like the 38/357.
I shoot specials in my 44 magnum Vaquero regularly.

Yep its ok...Just make sure you really clean the chambers after using the shorter rounds or else the mags either won't chamber well or get sticky extraction

You could probably trade those specials for mag cases and not worry about the ring.

If you don't mind cleaning "the ring" use the 44 specials for your lower end loads and the magnum brass for the higher performance loads. I used 44 specials for a long time in assorted 44 VAQUEROS and MARLIN Cowboy rifles and still have the good habit of cleaning the cylinder after each range session, regardless of brass type. A couple of swipes with a 50 caliber nylon rifle brush through each chamber and you're good to go.

If I EVER find a boatload of 44 Special cases anywhere, I'd be one happy brass scrounger. That stuff NEVER appears "laying around" for me.

hey i ain't got a dog in this fight but if I was you i'd trade 'em to one of these guys 44 Special don't sound like it really rings your bell and by tradeing to some one who's bell it does ring you look like a really great guy and create good karma which will pay divedens in the long run. Unfortunately, I don't own a case trimmer. I have easy access to .44 SPL cases, so I'm not hard up to trim Mags into Specials. I might do that for prcatice if I buy a trimmer.
So, until I either trade off the brass or buy a .44 mag, I'll just continue to accumulate it.
