I have an opportunity to buy a brand spanking new, never been used Lyman 45 lubrisizer for $75. No accessories, no box, no nuttin', just the bright orange machine with it's matte black linkages.

Question being, is it worth that much money? Or is it merely a license to buy spendy accessories?

I like my Lyman 45. That price does not seem out of line to me but I have no clue what the market is. Finding one that has never been used would be rare I would think. H & I dies are not exactly cheap but not terribly expensive either at $18.99 each @ Midwayusa.

Not sure I helped you but those are my thoughts.

Spendy accessories? like what? a couple of wrenches?..I've never used a Lyman 45 but there's folks that down right love em. Shooting & casting is chock full o accessories & some can be "spendy". If you take care of that sizer, it should out live you...

That's not a bad deal at all. Well used Lyman 45's are going for around $50. They're great lubesizers. I like them better than the 450's and 4500's.

If you cast your own, it's a necessary tool. Mine both are early style and have quite a few miles (bullets!) on them. I love them. Find an old Lyman handbook for directions, and enjoy your press.

I agree, they were a lot less a year ago.... but a new one at that price seems like a great deal.

I have one and I broke one. If I had the chance to buy a "new" one I'd jump on it for the $75. NOW that said, check the set screw in the front of the base that holds the sizing die in. If it isn't on center of the boss within maybe .010" or .015" I'd pass.

It seems that some were drilled and tapped off center by a significant amount and that weakens the casting considerably. Be careful to just snug the screw to hold the sizer if you do buy it. Over-tightening will crack the casting. The one that broke on me was used and had a hairline crack on the top of the casting. It was also drilled and tapped way off center. After using it a year, the crack expanded and another one started on the side...finally the two joined and broke out completely. Basically I decided the fixxing wasn't worth it so I bought a new 4500 to go with my other 45 (which is still working great). I like mine for soft lubes and harder lubes WITH a heater.

P.S. They are going for at least $50 on ebay in very used condition. I have seen some go as high as 95 bucks.

Well, since I'm 1/2 Norwegian and 1/16 Scot, I'm genetically obligated to offer $50 and let him beat me up to $60. I'll let you know how it goes.

Well, I maked another misteak. Hey, it happens! It is a 450, and it does have it's original box. I offered $50, we'll see if he takes it, or calls me names.

You could offer some Lutefisk in on trade.

I have a 45 lube/sizer in the bottom of a box somewhere in my storage. Do the current dies interchange? I used the 45 many years but do not have ,401/2 size dies for 38-40 and 10mm auto that I need now.

Yes the current sizing dies and top punches fit. Some of the parts interchange with the #450, The pressure rod and the pressure piston for example.. I replaced my rods and pistons on 2 of my #45's, the "O" rings on the new pistons are better IMHO.
