45Nut gave me this idea in chat the other day.
This is very easy to make, it honestly took me longer to find the chunk of Maple flooring I had burried in the wood pile than it did for me to make the jig.

I started by cutting the board in half length wise.

I dont have my table saw here so I used a Radial Arm saw so I didnt cut it full lenght.

Cut a few small blocks and screw them to the to flats.

I did that so I could add a hinge.

Next I drilled 2 holes space correctly to so I could run caridge bolts through and bolt it to the drill press table.

Next I closed the jig and clamped it and ran a smaller than diameter drill down the center of the split.

This was for my 500 S&W bullets so I used a drill about .485 or so.

Make sure the through hole is positioned correctly so the bullet base sits on the drill table. Recenter your jig and put in a 1/8 or 3/16 put in a cast bullet and clamp the non hinge side.Make sure you slow your drill down when you are drilling lead, if you go fast you will mess up the nose of the bullet.

Open up the jig and you have the end product.

Yours came out better looking than the scrapcrap jig I made akin this way about 15 yrs. ago. I think I`ll add your ideas to a new model for me. Thanks. :mrgreen:Robert

I drilled 50 bullets with a 1/8" bit yesterday in about 15 minutes. I am going to look for a stepped bit today to make a meaner hollow point on those 500 S&W bullets.

If 1/8" doesnt expand the way I want it to with straight wheelweights I am going to go bigger and softer. I can see a 1/4" hole and a 50/50 Pure/WW bullet expanding nicely. Just what I need for red squirrels.

Maybe ya oughta get yerself a .600 Nitro. Them tree rats take a lot a killin! Ya musta been kiddin? Don't think anything but a .22 or a varmint bullet will expand in a squirrel. Nice idea on that setup.

Another thought might be to keep the hole size you have, and switch to a countersink bit for a lead in.

Very nice! And with a longer base on the jig you'd have room for more carriage bolt placements, and thus more calibers. I can see 45/70, 41 Magnum, 8mm, and .30 for starters.:drinks:

Sure wish I had some mechanical skills.[smilie=1:

Hey Doug, I have been thinking about trying some of those in my Encore ML. Is that the Lee mold?

Ever tried them in a muzzle loader?

I made a bit out of an old spade style wood bit I took down with a dremel tool to shape it and ground down the point till i had the right shape i wanted then ground it at an angle till sharp and ran a stone to finish it you can take one and make it any shape hole you want with a little time and effort.

Lead is incredibly sticky when trying to machine it. Grind a negative rake on the lips of the twist drill for better chip ejection. A tiny dab of butter flavor Crisco on the point of the bit is very helpful as well.

Why Butter Flavor Crisco, you ask? God knows, I say, but it works better for a machining lube than anything I know of in it's price class and smells nice. It is great on steel, alumin(i)um, brass and iron. I've drilled some magnificent 3/4" diameter x 30" deep holes in lead sailboat keels and lubed with everything from kerosene to cable pulling lube. Nothing worked as well as Butter Flavor Crisco. You have not lived until you've tried to drill large diameter deep holes in lead with a 1" air motor. I'd almost rather vote Dhimmicrat than have to do that again.

...............For a meaner HP for that fat boolit use a #4 centerdrill. Or use the centerdrill first and then swap in a 3/16ths, 7/32nds, or a 1/4" bit.
