While casting up all of those .375 RBs out of funky alloy I cast up a single Ranch Dog .460 to usa as a BHN test slug (random curiosity over the weird alloy... comes out at 17...

Anyway, on a whim I grabbed a piece of CBC .410 Brass and stuck the CG shank into the mouth... perfect, tight fit.

So... here's the weird thought...

Given a properly reamed out barrel... why COULDN'T you use .410 brass and a GC boolit to make a semi-fixed heeled BP cartridge?

You can. Certainly! But is SEMI-fixed, as you stated.
To make it more sturdy I've modified a Lee crimp die (444M) to swag the next band up from the base, allowing deeper seating. ATT 4 ft of snow and sub 0* temps have precluded range testing.
The 45-70 brass will not, however, fit into a .410 chamber. At least , not any of mine, and the 410 brass is short for my Rossi.
You may find it acceptable for .410 slug loads in your equipment.

OI,
This heel concept is something, way down on the list, you understand, that I wanted to try with a .44-40. A boolit sized to fit the groove diameter of an old gun may not be able to be seated and chambered. The reason I have not jumped on this with the .44 is that the full diameter portion would be short. It would be more accurate that your typical .427 dia., but maybe not dramatically so.

It's an interesting idea, but not so interesting that I'd build a rifle specifically for. Of course, you could always ream it out to a 45-2.6 Sharps when you got bored with it.
