Greetings, I recently came into a good size lot of lead alloy that seems perfect for 45 ACP that I mean to use (eventually) for NRA Bullseye competition.

Last time I looked into this the 200 gr SWC was said to be the best boolit for this application, not sure if this has changed. Boolits will be fired out of a 1911 Colt Gold Cup Trophy series 80.

Do I need a different boolit for 25 yds, 50 yds and indoor 50 feet?

What mould(s) do I want to buy? I would think multiple cavity would be in order.

Thanks!

Many, many years ago, I began shooting Bullseye using the Lyman 452460 (200 gr) in a Series 70 Gold Cup and found that, properly loaded, the gun/boolit combination shot a lot better than I could hold. Later on, I switched to the RCBS 45-185-SWC in the same GC (with equally good results) simply because that boolit shot better in my compensated .45 "racegun" and I didn't feel like casting two similar boolits for the same caliber. Both shot sufficiently well at all ranges that my out-of-the-box GC would match scores with my buddy's Les Baer Custom shooting commercial ammo.

+1 for the very accurate 452460 200 grain SWC.

I've shot the lyman two hundred grain bullet some and it works well . I do get as good and better accuracy with the H&G 130 that I have , I think they are easier to cast as well .

For hardball use .... The H&G 292 is my hands down choice .

I think most of the designs can be made to work if you only have one gun to feed .

I fired many thousand of Lyman 452460 in Bullseye competition with total satisfaction. If the bullet missed the x-ring, it was my fault and not the bullet.

I shoot the fifty foot indoor Bullseye using a S&W 625. From a rest I can't see any differance between the Lee 200 grain SWC or the Lyman SWC. The Lee SWC can be used in a seating die set up for a 225-230 grain Round nose without having to mess with the seating plug. The longer bullet seems to load easier in my chambers. I understand that the H&G 68 can also be used without changing seating dies.

452460 and 4.0 of bullseye from a machine rest in a very much worked over 1911 was good for 1.25" at 50 yards for 5 shots. Those bullets were cast in a 1 cavity from pure lino. I would watch using TOO soft an alloy in 45 with a fast powder, I fired some cast from pure lead over 4.0 bullseye and the rifling marks on the bullets were 25% wider than with lino and accuracy was more like 6" at 50 yards.

H&G #130, or Lyman's 452460 were "the" bullseye boolits last time I shot Bullseye.

Thanks guys! I'll start shopping for a mould. This 400+ pounds of ~15 BHN alloy just kind of fell out of the sky. I've had my Gold Cup for about 5 years and haven't fired it yet, I think the arrival of this alloy is a sign. :) Haven't fired my S&W 41 yet either but both of these errors will be rectified as soon as the weather breaks.

I have only the Gold Cup as a wad gun, I do have another 1911 but thats a leg gun and I have a bunch of J word Sierra 230 FMJ TM's for that pistol.

I shoot too much rifle, time to branch out a bit!

Thanks again !! :drinks:

I have used LYMAN/H&G and SAECO as well as lee which I use now.
my load is 3.6 of 700X or bulleseye.I shoot an AMT long slide.the lee works good and is inexpensive at $36 from midsouthshooters.they are all good molds.:coffee:

I have a 4 cavity H&G 130 (185gr. SWC) that I picked up at the Tulsa gun show. I also have the Lee six cavity H&G 68 copy group buy mould that also casts great. I traded for a Saeco #69 which is so close to the H&G copy that I have to look hard to tell the difference. My Saeco is only a two cavity but they do make them in four cavity.

One more vote for 452460 - in my case over 3.5 Titegroup. <1" at 25 yds in DW 1911.
H&G 130 almost as good. H&G 68 not nearly as good with commercial or my own cast.

Any of the bullets mentioned should work well for you. I am currently shooting two 625's and use the H&G #130 and the Saeco #68 with equal results. All four cavity moulds. The H&G mould is just a tad better (teeny tiny bit:mrgreen:) in casting but Ransom Rest results are in the same ballpark. If it is not an "X" it is ME! I use those same bullets in a pair of tuned 1911's with VERY nice results.

Here's what the H&G #130 looks like (don't have a picture of the Saeco):

+1 more for the -460 - I have had no problems with feeding in either of my 1911's, a house gun and a wad gun. And I STRONGLY suggest cutting your BHN 15 alloy 50/50 with WW's. You do not need hard alloy with the .45 - Most anything above pure lead will do just fine, and pure lead CAN be made to work - just no need for the effort.
