Whats a 50# flat rate box of reclaimed shot worth????

At least, that's what an ad in the local shopping weekly offers it for. At that price, the 50 lb. would be $30 plus postage.

Something else to consider:

You'd probably need to find some (extra) way to contain the shot.

Otherwise your 50# box of shot might be 20# by the time it arrives at it's destination.

IF it has been laying out on the ground a long time , it MAY have a lot of lead oxide on it. That stuff is hard to melt. I had to roll about 10 pounds of shot between steel plates to break up the oxide layer so the shot would melt. I needed the shot for the arsenic content. I was doing a heat treating experiment. It wound up being to labor intensive for ME!!

I paid $20 per 25lb bag of reclaimed shot last Sept, back when lead was crazy expensive.

It came in heavy duty bags.

I was desperate and bought 550lbs of it.

I use it for skeet and trap. I use range lead for casting.

Only magnum shot has arsenic. Chilled shot does not. Something to remember when shopping for lead. It would be practically impossible to tell the difference when dealing with scrap shot.

The only thing that concerns me with reclaimed shot these days is this -

What if you get some Bismouth shot mixed in there?

Will that ruin the melt the way that even small amounts of zinc does?

Keep your temp around 650 and all the other stuff will float to the top. Bismuth is going to take some real heat to melt.

According to this (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bismuth), bismuth melts @ 530 degrees F.

How can it be bad for your melt though? I think that is one of the favorite things they ad to toy soldier alloys.

Bismuth is great! European match pellets contain it. ... felix

As for shipping shot in flat rate boxes...

Even if perfectly contained in bags etc the postal service will beat the tar out of the box making it out of round, then they will bill the person receiving it for standard priority fees by the weight of the package.

Back when lead was sky high I tried to stuff 63lbs of tire weights into a flat rate box, they delivered it and demanded another $40-some worth of postage. Needless to say my (ebay) customer refused the package and was pretty upset and I had to refund his money. Eventually I did get my lead back but lost my ebay fees, postage and a potentially good customer.

Any way sorry for the rant, if you do ship lead via flat rate support the box with cardboard or wood padding or another box on the inside so it will stay square during transit and look nice on delivery.
