I have spring break coming up in a couple of weeks and my wife is going to be gone on a misson trip for the entire time. I am going to have a lot of time to shoot. I want to work up a good load for my 357 Marlin cowboy and my S&W 586 with a 8 3/8 barrel. I know each gun will be different unless I am extremely lucky.

I am going to use my Mountain mold boolit. It is a 160 grain plain based boolit with a 50% meplat. I wanted a boolit that would shoot good out of both my rifle and pistols that would hold up well at 100 meters plus.

I am going to start with 7 grains of Unique. I have heard the 10 grains of Blue Dot talked about quite a bit. I am using 357 mag cases.

Does anyone have any suggestions of loads and powders to try? My pistol has shot best at 100 with 14.5 -15 grains of 2400, but I am looking for a less than max load since this will be for targets.

Thanks,

Dunno how it might perform in your rifle, but I've shot some pretty fair scores at Hunter Pistol Sillywhets using 15.0 gr IMR4227 behind the Lyman 358156 (162 gr. w/GC, from my mould) in a 10" Contender. The same load, also, shoots quite well from both my 6" S&W 586 and 4 4/8" BH flattop. At 160 gr (nominal), your bullet weight is close enough that performance should be just about the same.

i use 7 grs of 2400 in a 38 case and it will knock the rams down with no problem.
