Anyone using WC680 in cast boolit rifle loads? I've been working with it. It works ok, but not as good as WC820. Been loading at about 10-15% over WC820.

Been using it in 30-06, 8x57, 7.62x54r and other silmilar case sizes.

ANy comments?

Thanks!

Leadmine,

I have used it in the 223, 270, 30-30, 357 Magnum, 44 Magnum, and the 445 Super Magnum. I only have one load listed as acceptable accuracy and that is with the 357 Magnum using a Ruger Security-six handgun. The cast bullet is a 358429 moving at an average velocity of 1011 fps. It supposed to be THE powder (actually AA-1680) for the 445 SM—well it wasn’t THE powder for my 445 SM!! I guess when you get right down to it; I didn’t have really very good success with it at all. Yet, with some more messing around, it may work O.K. in the 44. Good-luck…BCB

All that I've used it for is .45-70, with charges in the mid-30s (grains) and lead bullets in the 325-340 grain range. Needs a magnum primer. Jury's out on whether it needs a little tuft of polyester fiberfill, but I think it generally does better with it. Gives velocities in the blackpowder .45-90 range, loaded as above.

Has anyone used it in the .30 Herrett? Just curious about that caliber, too.

I use it in my .500 S&W 20" Encore barrel. I use a slightly compressed charge behind a 440 grain WFN and averages an even 1650 fps. Much like AA1680 but more batch to batch variations. I hear it does well in the .357 Maximum too and know a fella with a Winchester 43 in .22 hornet that loves the stuff. It may do well in the Herrett as I believe the powder was designed for the 7.62x39 but could be wrong.

I use it in the 25-20 and the 256 win. mag with the lyman 257420. Never have chronoed the 10 grain load in each but estimate about 1400 out of the 1920's ventage 94 Marlin.

Winchester-Western used to have loads for 680 in the .25-20 in their manual.

I'm hoping for good results with it in my .22 K-Hornet. Time will tell.

Edit: I should have said earlier, I already know what it'll do in my .445 Super mag. Start load does a hair over 1600 fps with the Lee 310 gr. slug, that's fast enough. I haven't tried it in my .357 Max. or my .223 yet, but I'll get around to it.

How well does it really compare to the old canister grade?

Some WC-680 for the masochistic 25-20 WCF was going to be my next move with that caliber.

I like it with the Hornady 180 XTP in my 357 Maximum rifle, gives 2060 fps and takes deer out NOW. I also shoot it in hunting loads for my 38-55. Layne Simpson wrote an article on the 444 Marlin about 3 years ago and gave AA1680 a good report in that case as well.

I have used the original WW680 very successfully in the 30 Herrett. That is why I wonder how similar the surplus is.
