Since I've been having trouble with my plain base mold and sizing I decided to take a break and try out one of my new molds. I used a 44 cal RCBS 240 with gas check, 11grains Unique, CCI LP primers, and water dropped to 19bhn. I got a little antsy with the trigger on two shots but otherwise I was quite pleased.

Ruger SRH off a rest with scope.

Hate to see a fellow waste money on GCs---you can try wax gas checks that reportly work well. I too shoot a SBH as well as an 8" Mo 29. I use a varaiety of different CB's and size to .430". All loads lead up my barrels. However if one uses wax GCs you will have almost zero leading. I have used wax GC and they do work.

I tend to use milder loads----a 250 grain Keith bullet with 9.0 grains of HP-38 or 10.0 of Unique. I usually don't use any type of GC---I will use a lead remover patch after so many rounds to de-lead the barrel. Hve been told the problem is that the barrels both have restrictions at the barrel frame juncture that causes the problem. Lapping would remove the constriction and solve most of the leading problem.

I agree Wally, gas checks are spendy. I think the 240 gas check slugs will also work well out of my 444 so that will be fun to see. I was mainly just excited to see a good group for once. Now that I've discovered water quenching, I'm going to go back and mix up a batch of 265 plain base and see if that makes a difference.

I may also, for kicks, try shooting these without gas checks in my SRH.

That's quite a respectable result. Shame about the trigger problem? [smilie=1:

Keep working on it and it might go away.
