View Full Version : PICS! Delta Lathe came home but I didn't get the tail stock. : (

I went to pick up the lathe today #46-525 and as I got there my wood working buddy showed up and I was distracted and didn't see the tail stock was missing. I'm not even sure what it looks like seeing I haven't run this lathe style since 1972.The guy sold the lathe didn't mention it either.
Dumb Dumb Dumb! I'm Dumb
I called him and ask him about it and he said it didn't have one when he got it.
Lying by omission. :(

It is 1 phase 3/4 HP motor and it says 120/220 on the motor badge.

Looks like your new purchase is in pretty good shape. If the lathe is in current production you can probably buy a new one but it will probably be expensive. There are tons of used equipment dealers around on the 'Net that may have one available. That's how a I found a steadyrest for my metal lathe a few years ago.

Even though I don't do much woodworking it would be nice to have for final sanding and polishing metal parts to keep grit off bedways (yes I cover them up but it's not a perfect solution).

Hope you have a lot of fun with your new "toy"!

It looks like it may have been in a chool to begin with, given the warnign tag on the cabinet. You should be able to get what you need. It also appears that you will faceplate, and other tools if you did not get them.

Try woodworkers supply as they also deal in used equipment and parts.

@Duke.... that looks a lot like the lathe I have, excepet that I do NOT have an enclosed stand with a what I think is called a Reeves drive where the pulleys expand, I think???

Anywhooo.... I have to ask... what is up with all the pine "scraps" in the background?

I think you could get by just calling Delta direct for the tailstock.

Oops... I forgot to mention, the tailstock could be inside the cabinet.

I know at one point there was an Old Woodworking Machines Yahoo Group (message forum).

They don't have them anymore Russell.
What's in the cabinet is motor and wires.

Delta doesn't have any of the old parts?!

Did they ask you for a model number?

Did they ask you for a serial number?

Then somebody would know how to get one over at the OWWM Yahoo groups message board.

If you haven't used a wood lathe before, you should really think about getting some one on one tutelage.

It would be all too easy to get a tool to catch and get torqued out of your hands and/or to get something like a finger, a hand, or a sleeve caught between whatever is spinning and the tool rest.

Well Delta called me back and said they had 14 of them for $800.00 each. I hope they like them.

Yep I will have no problem. Most about the place know I have been doing 17th and 18th Century Woodworking or 30 years as a hobby. Vegas though is fresh out of green wood so I'll have to wait until I get relocated. Plus I am very familiar running modern machinery.
This lathe is just a starter for me and has sentimental reason as I ran the same one in High School Shop and will suffice until I get my Powermatic with extensions. It sure beats the heck out of my treadle lathe I have back in WA.
I am though looking for another Rockwell doner lathe.
I will pull the bed off mine, drop a predrilled 11" X 10' piece of 1/2 inch cold rolled on it, attach the doner leg on the end. Then bolt the lathe bed back on cabinet with the 1/2 inch plate sandwhich between it, then bolt the doner bed onto the plate. Hence this will give me a 8 foot lathe bed. I will however keep this lathe forever pending restoration.

Duke-

I may have that lathe minus the stand and motor, and may be up to selling it. What is the distance across the ways?

Just Duke
02-18-2009, 04:19 AM
Pat I would be very interested in it and would glady pay shipping also.
1 1/2" Bed gap
5 1/2" side to side
Can you send me a pic?
PM sent with phone number.

Did you measure across the top of the bed ways, and not the width of the whole bed?

Cause I got 1 1/2" gap, and 3 7/8" on the ways.

PatMarlin
02-18-2009, 01:21 PM
Also measure from the top of the ways to the tailstock center point.

PatMarlin
02-18-2009, 01:33 PM
I measure 5 1/4" across the bottm of the bed casting center.

A quick measurment estimate from the top of the ways to center on the tailstock is 5 1/2" to 5 5/8", but I would need to take another look to be dead on,.

Duke,

Our phone's still out by the storms. Your bed is wider, eventhough the gap is the same. Your's probably has a wider swing too.

I do have the exact same lathe. If you need other meas let me know. It looks like you are also missing the short lever on the vari-drive adjuster. I took the shield off (scratched from cleaning or removing finish splatter). Mine is near new and came from a school that had closed its shop dept.

Thanks Gussy.
The handle was snaped off.
I drilled it and "easy out" it
Would the shield be for sale pending this gets finished?

It can be had, but... shipping it would be a problem. It is bulky and not an easy thing to package. I know exact where the shield is but I would have to do some serious digging to find the mount if it isn't still attached!! Since my move, things are still in bunches. I'm sure you would have to get new bolts as they were almost certainly not all moved together.

In the FWIW dept, I bought this lathe in 1986 along with 2 others that were not vari drives when the school closed out.

You know you can use a different size, or make and fabricate an adaptor for it to fit your lathe.

It's not the correct one for the year of my lathe but I'm sure the wood won't know the difference. It's the Delta HD lathe.
It's missing the cup dead center though.
