Hello all,

I'm new to this game of casting my own boolits. So of course I have (probably) some basic questions about the lead I need and or the mixture of such alloys. At the moment I am wanting to cast some 405 grain 45/70 bullets for my trusty sharps rifle. This would be a BCPR rifle and I have only shot store bought cast boolits in it in the past. but those suckers are getting damn expensive. I guess my question is, what would be a good mixture of lead and wheel weights or lead and ......? I have a buckets of wheel weights and some pure lead. I mostly shoot sillhouette with it, and I have had good results with SPG lube. If anyone has some ideas I would greatly appreciate any recipes for bullets.

Thanks

Matt

Dont use the WW for BPCR. Most people shoot 20/1 or 30/1 Lead/Tin.

And 405 is a little light for .45 in BPCRS,. You might want to look at 500+. Brooks, Paul Jones, or NEI for semi custom.

I shot a long range buffalo match at Buffalo Gap ND a few years ago. I had some orders to fill and brought some extra boolits with me to sell. I started the match shooting 20/1 alloy in a 45/70 Browning. At the break for painting targets a fella wanted to buy all the rest of the style boolits I was shooting in that alloy. I do not size my match brass so gave him all I had boxed and loaded. I just slipped out the boolits that were loaded and replaced them with the same design but in WW alloy. My rifle never missed a beat, never changed zero, and grouped the same. As I recall i shot a 8x8 well centered at the 800 yard buffalo after the change using the sight setting for the 20/1. Just cause the rest of the sheep do one thing dont mean it has to be so!!! Try them WW's fella, let the gun tell you what it wants to shoot. Dont be a sheep!

I agree with trying the WW's. I've had four Sharps, a Trapdoor, a .45-70 86 Wichester, a Martini Henry, that all shot WW's just fine, and kept me up with the competition. And i know lots of others shooting them.

Wheel weights work just fine. The only problem I had was that they leaded to bore a little. I shoot a .460 or .461 boolit out of a .4595 bore. Adding just a touch of tin can make them better.

Ever think of paper patching? you don't get any bore leading.

Thanks guys,

I'm gonna try and fire up the old lead pot in a next weekend, and pour me some boolits. I'll try a few different mixtures and see what my sharps likes.

Many thanks,

Matt
