with some powders they aren't needed.
for others they will take the place of some powder, settle down the sd's and es's.
they can also help to protect the base of the boolit some.
most of my better [more accurate] loads with cast use them.
this of course refers to rifle loads.
a full case of slow powder[rl-19,h-4831] or a fast powder[bullseye-unique] up to the speed of 2400 or so don't need them but the middle powders [4895] really do better with them.

hey joe thanks for the reply the rifle in question is original low wall 25-20ss lyman 748 field scope on it both a gift from a very generous friend.Started loading for it today worked from 6gr 2400 up to 9gr 2400.The boolit is RCBS plain base 85gr...6gr load 1324fps average... leading started to show up at 7gr 1570fps...50yd groups 10shot at 6.5gr were a nice round 3/4'' but the es was 83.68fps was hoping filler would help any thoughts?

i would change powders i use aa 1680 and aa2230 in my 25-20.
i also run my boolits at 259-260.
i also water drop them seems to work in the old win 92..

Depends. If you have a chronograph, if you have a Standard deviation +/- 20fps you probably don't need it with a given load. My rule of thumb anyhow.

On the other hand, if I shoot, say, 28 gr of 4895 over a 150 gr bullet in a 30-06 w/o filler, I'll get a 200 fps spread. With filler, much better. Less vertical stringing.

In the .25/20, I do not believe there is a need for any type of filler, especially if you are using faster powders i.e., #2400, Unique etc. at a relatively low velocity of 1300 f.p.s. or so with 85 gr. bullets.
Comparatively speaking, this is a quite small case with a small charge. You might consult the Lyman Reloading Manual, and try a slower, bulkier powder. I've never experienced your problem in my old Win. M-53.

In rifles with the "slow" fast burning powders, medium burning powders and slow burning powders where loading density is 80% or less I arbitraily use a dacron filler in cases of .222 capacity or larger. I have consistantly found that ignition is much improved and less powder is needed. Improved ignition results in smaller SD and ESs which almost always improves accuracy. You generally need to shoot farther than 50 yards though. The benifits of the dacron filler are such that unless loading densities are over 80% I just use the dacron filler.

With lighter loads using the faster pistol/shotgun powders under medium or lighter cast bullets I do not use either filler or wad. I use a powder that gives consistant ignition at the velocity level desired. Most often for velocities up to 1200 fps this is with Bullseye. With velocities of 1100 to 1400 fps it is most often with Unique.
