I have been wondering for a long time about out of round boolits. It seems to me that the boolits I cast are out of round by .0005" to as much as .001" regardless of diameter or type. Is this normal? Am I doing something wrong like holding the handles too tightly, too loosely etc. What is the effect on accuracy if the sizer does not completely round them out during sizing? What have you guys experianced?

I think that unless the are real bad, or undersized, the barrel will take care of things.

as much as .001???????

Is that all? Shoot'em.

Hold your boolits in the jaws of your calipers and spin them. You will be surprised on how much they vary. Mine very also but so far they shoot great!!!

But, if they were really round, would they shoot greater?

I suspect the journey down the barrel evens things out. I have not had issues yet.

I haven't had a chance to test my 158g SWC-TL, but I know my .356 124g TL is out of round. Try LEEMENTING, and you'll see that the cavities tend to like to shave the boolits while you spin them.

Out of all my Lee and Lyman molds, none cast a perfectly round bullet. As others have said the barrel is the ultimate sizer.

I agree the barrel will take care of the "final sizing" but I concerned with the as cast boolit being run through the sizer and some areas being sized more than others and the affect on accuracy do to metal being displaced to one side or the other or a out of balance boolit.

I would run them through the sizer and shoot them.

I have a .356 mold that drops them up to .003" either way (.353-.359). They seemed to shoot fine as cast but it kind of bugged me that they weren't round so I started sizing them. After sizing they come out perfectly round (.355).

I had a Lyman 311410 that dropped at .306 x .313. I never could get better than 8" group with it. Sent it back and they replaced it with one that is round but a little small. Improved group size to about 3".

Any cherry cut mold will be a little out of round. I can't make them perfect no matter how rigid I make my vise. The cutter leads at each block edge and the dimensions at the parting line are always larger. I feel that sets up a vibration in the cherry at that point no matter how slow a cut is made.
I never seen where a small amount ever hurt accuracy.
I have tried to lap under size molds too and that makes them more out of round, even a factory will not lap a mold. The problem is that a grit loaded boolit will hold the blocks open at the start and the edges get hit more.
Lathe cut molds are more even.
