H4895 is made by ADI and sold here as AR2206H. Here is the starting data from the ADI site.

180 AR2206H 24" 34.0 2178

That's for jacketed bullets. I would load 30gr and clock it. That will put you very close.

28.5 with a filler hits 1950 in my 308- 7.5x55 and other cases this size.

In several SMLE N1 MK 1s and No 4 Mark IIIs 29 gr of H4895 with a 3/4 gr dacron filler under C312-185 average around 1800-1850 fps. That is generally the best accuracy load. Between 31 and 32 gr of H4895 should get you 2000 fps. There are of course variables but that should be close. Only your rifle and a chronograph will know for sure.

Thanks Larry and others. I'm working up a load with enough power for deer up to 100 yards and something that will work for black bear defense if needed. I don't want to use a filler. If 34 grains is safe without a filler, I think I'll try that load.

The 34 gr. load that Jeff cited is a STARTING load for 180 gr. JACKETED. From experience, I can tell you that going much past 32-32.5 gr H4895 with the Lee 185 is an invitation to some serious leading...even with fairly hard (22-24 BHn) boolits.

32.0 gr H4895 (with Quaker Instant Grits for a filler) under the Lee 185 (sized .315) produces 2072 fps (chrono'd average for 10 rounds with an SD of 19) from my 1942 Longbranch #4Mk1. If I do my part, 100M groups run consistently 2"-2 1/4" using original military sights. On the downside, after 30-40 rounds, leading begins to become an issue and it's necessary to run a bronze brush through the bore, followed by a couple of dry patches, to maintain that level of accuracy.

With paper, I am loading 40gns of 4895 and getting great groups!
I couldn't make anything work just casting.

I wouldn't use the load for target shooting, just hunting so I'm not gonna sweat the leading too much as long as it is fairly accurate. Thanks again for the good info. I've never used a filler and I'm afraid I might blow something up not knowing what I'm doing.
