Link to study showing tungsten/leukemia connection.

Just bring it up as this is one of the metals suggested, by those that want to
ban lead, for us to use in bullets.

Unintended consequences you can share with the lead ban crowd.

cant tell ya how many tungsten electrodes ive sharpened on a grinder wheel. Im talking about TIG welding, and there dont seem to be a better way of doing it.

It seems to me most any substance ingested in quantity will give you cancer or something. I expect soon we'll hear beer gives you cancer. The screams will start then, I assure you!

Bret,
I guess you could call that an ale-ment.

FWIW, the #1 cause of Death in the world is Birth.

Can't die unless you get born.

I suggest we outlaw it.

You can get special vacuum grinders for tungsten electrode grinding. The real culprit in tungsten electrodes is Cobalt. Really nasty stuff!

Anything we eat, drink, or inhale will end up killing us. I say to heck with it and just do what I enjoy. No one is getting out of here alive anyway.

If we weren't meant to consume that stuff, we wouldn't have an ale-imentary tract.

The simple fact of the matter is that cancer will get you eventually if nothing else does. The fools that are trying to "cure all ills" will one day ban breathing as the last "cause" of cancer. Outlaw oxygen! It's an incredibly strong oxidizer that participates in any variety of damaging chemical reactions in our body, eventually leading to a cancer-causing event....

I can think of a list of folks that should be denied oxygen... in the name of health benefits, of course!

You want to depopulate D.C.?

Actually cobalt is used for medical implants because it is very wear resistant and well tolerated by the body. Check out the alloy ASTM F-75.

Having worked my entire career in the chemical industry I think cancer risks are overated. Discounting the heavy smokers I have known, I can't think of any body I knew that contracted or died of cancer. Heart disease or strokes killed most of the guys I knew that did not die of old age. :-D

WE'RE ALL GONNA DIE ! 1 ! ! ! ! 1

Life is a sexually transmitted, ultimately terminal disease !

I think I'll save my worrying for squeezing enough money out of the annual household budget for Fishing and Hunting Licenses plus enough for beer and whisky to lubricate the lying sessions that follow as surely as the night, at the end of each day.

Alloyed cobalt is not the problem, just as mercury in amalgam fillings poses no danger - it's the airborne dust you should watch out for.

In calculating risk it is useful to remember "The Rules Of the Game"

1. You can't win

2. You can't break even

3. You can't quit

4. Nobody bets out alive

Explains everything so enjoy the time you have.

I do some TIG-welding occasionally, do you think I should be concerned with grinding tungsten electrodes?

There's always dihydrogen monoxide (DHMO). That is some truly nasty stuff--odorless and colorless, it is absolutely lethal when inhaled, even in relatively small amounts. It's also a major contributor of acid rain, among other things. In its gaseous state it can cause some horrific burns. Bad, bad stuff.

It has some good properties, though. Essential for good coffee!

Certainly true--the best coffee always has a fair amount of DHMO in it.

Damn, I've been spraying my lawn with that stuff for years. It never occurred to me how dangerous that stuff could be! Ya know, I think they started putting it in beer a while back too...

The anties out there would have you believe that any metal you touch will give you cancer,
they don't tell you how much you would have to ingest to do this...Pounds, I've been welding and grinding metals for 40+ years and I'm still here...for now. I've heard it said you can't get out alive...oh well , I'll cast mine...S.L.
