I was wondering if anyone here has a good load reccomendation for 38 special using a small pistol magnum primer instead of standard small pistol primers. I am using 158 gr. semi wad-cutter boolits cast from wheel weights. Thanks, Joel

Why do you want mag primers in the .38?

Because i got a boatload of them for free............. I also dont have any need for small pistol primers other than 38 and 357....so i wanna use the free stuff for both..........

I use them in the place of Small Pistol Primers.
No biggee, same loads also.

Gander Mtn had the Remington small pistol magnum primers on sale some time ago and I bought a bunch. I tend to use them with the slower burning powders in the .357 and the M-1 carbine pistol loads. Will probably try them in the 9mm as well. I would back down on the recommended top end loads if the data used standard primers.

I just loaded and shot several loads with different powders and these primers. I shot them slightly reduced, then moved them up to full pressure loads. only thing different was the sound. Thanks Docone and Poygan, for the input and taking the time to throw something constructive my way . Thanks Todd in oregon for answering my question....with a question...........

Didn't see this until now. I've been using Remington 51/2 small pistol magnums for all 38 special and 357 loads for years with no ill effect, from 140 full wadcutters with reddot to 358429 boolit loads with lil gun and everything in between, never had a problem.
