After a 20+ year hiatus I have decided to start casting my own bullets again. I plan to cast the Lyman 429421 as a general purpose bullet for my S&W 629 .44 magnum and cast softer for light .44 special loads in the 629 and a Charter Arms Bulldog. My question is what would be a good choice for a good general purpose bullet for .45 ACP / Autorim for use in a S&W 625 .45 ACP revolver? I would like something that I could also use in a .45 auto and that I can get in a 4 or 6 cavity mold. I am leaning towards the Lee 452-228-1R, anyone have any experience with this bullet in a .45 ACP revolver?

I think you will like the Lee TL 200 much better but if you want a lube boolit the Lee 200 is good

The GB 45BD is my favorite, but something in the 200-220 gr area with a FN will work fine.

The 185 to 200 grain is best out of the S&W 625.

I probably should let this rest but That extra cup of coffee made me do it.

A few years back, John Taffin wrote an artical about the S&W 625. He tried several popular types of ammo. Among the cast boolet loads he found the Lyman Thompson gas check version #452490 to be the cats whiskers.
If driven real hard I might find that copy.

I would try the 200 or 230 gr TC design. The 230 TC is what I use mostly i my 45 ACP, don't currently have a 625.

It's not always the most accurate, but the Lyman 452374 can be made to work in any .45 ACP platform.

The Lee 230 RN is not the most accurate boolit I've shot. BUT, like the Ly 452374 it will feed and function in ANY 1911 out there, or something is wrong. Of those two I prefer the Ly, and with a 4 banger mould it's almost as fast as the Lee 6 cavity. BUT, it costs more -- for the mould and the [4 cav] handles.

There are other boolits that are more accurate. That list will be as long as there are members here who shoot the 1911. BUT none will feed or function more reliably as the 2 RNs mentioned above. It's the nature of the beast.

I use this for a 625 and just received a LEE 230 TC Tumble Lube six banger from Midway. THe hope is that the TC boolit will reload quicker from speed loaders than the LEE TL SWC. The SWC is a fine, accurate boolit in bothe the 1911 and 625 the short coming is slow reloads in the revolver for falling plate shooting.

The LEE 230 TC boolits that I have tried were accurate in both handguns.

Thanks for the advice guys, I am going to go with the Lee TL452-200-SWC, in fact I just called Midway right now, it’s on sale! :) They had a 4 cavity 429421 in stock as well! :) :) I was leaning toward the RN for better feeding in autos but the primary use will be the S&W 625, I was a bit hesitant with the tumble lube design but so many folks are happy with them around here so I will give them a try, I planned to pan lube them anyway. Now, to score some wheel weights…….

I use the Lee 228 RN mold for my 625 in action pistol. Seatthem fairly deep and they go in the cylinder quick and shoot plenty accurate out to 50 yards. I pushed mine with 5.2 gr of Green Dot and shot more than 2500 so far. I did have my cylinder reamed to allow a bullet to pass through. Some 625 had tight chambers 0.450 and that will cost you accuracy. Check by dropping a bullet through each chamber.

Not being an accuracy nut like many on here are and plinking and practice are my main goals. I've got a TL230 of Lee's as much for production as accuracy. They seemed to shoot better than I can with a blackhawk combo which is what I'll be shooting as I don't own a semi and am not very much into them anyway.

Wish I had a case of liquid alox now as three places I tried to order it were out of stock and Lee direct wants nearly five bucks a bottle for it. thankfully I've got about three gallons of boolits cast up and aloxed. Should be close to enough to load this 5gal bucket of brass I've got ready to start loading the next session to the loading room.

shiloh, glad to read you've had good luck with it too.

I shoot the Lee 452-228-1R in my 625 for USPSA. They work great and I've got more than a couple thousand down range now.

<====== Those are 452-228-1R in my avatar. :)

I like the Ideal/Lyman 452423, especially in the 25-2, and in the RBH with the ACP cylinder. Mine come in about 238 grains or so, lubed and ready to go. I don't shoot them much in the 1911, as I prefer the 185 to 200 grain there.

We did a 6 C Lee GB in 452423 a while back and that has made things a lot easier. Both the 2 C and 4 C Ideal/Lyman are way too much $$, when you can find them.

I have three of the above revolvers. I have had great results with the Lee none TL lube and Lyman molds using wheel weights and Rooster Bullet Jacket lube.
I shoot fifty foot Bullseye, ISPSA and Steel. for Bullseye have good groups with both the Lee or Lyman 200 grain SWC. I like the Lee bullet better because it is the same length as the lyman 225 RN so I don't have to adjust the seating die for the differant bullets.
The longer bullet offers a faster reload using moon clips.
The Lee die is a bit delicate and if I found a equal four cavity mold in steel I'd change.
I had undersize bullets with the Lee TL round nose mold, when fired in my S&W revolvers. I had much more leading then other molds and the rounds would back out under recoil. They might work fine in a semi pistol.

I tried several different molds liked the SAECO456 the best 225 gr works well in 625 for uspsa and in the 45 autos as well. I have shot thousands of these run through a .452 sizer with speed green lube I had the throats opened up also to pass a .452 with light finger pressure.
