View Full Version : So I slugged my cylinders...

So I slugged my cylinders on my Super Redhawk and they came out at .432. Does this sound right? Reason I ask is cuz it seems that most standard sizing dies stop at .431 for .44's. If I understand it correctly, you want the cylinder throat to squeeze the slug just a little before entering the barrel. I don't think I'm going to be getting any "squeezing" out of .432 throats if my bullets are smaller.

Anyone care to comment?

Now slug the barrel. The barrel should be at least the same, but smaller, ie .431, would be better. Lyman and RCBS stop at .431 but I had Buckshot make me a .4325 sizer die and when I bought my Star I got a .432 from them also.

I dont know if squeezing in the throats is good, but they should be fairly snug fit on the bullet and definitely larger than the barrel.

Tlhis has been covered in the "Wheelguns" area. Also do a search on "cylinder throats" lots of good posts from knowledgeable folks here on the subject. I have been discovering this area of fitting cast boolits to the gun myself lately.

My redhawk goes .432 and my smith's go .430-431. I have an older Lyman sizer that goes .432 and I use it on all my .44 boolits.

You fellas worry too much! My SRH shot 1/2" groups at 50 yd's and it had a .430 bore with .432 throats. .430 Hornady and .431 cast shot the same. I used to drive my friends nuts by shooting pop cans at 200 yd's from bags.
The center can was with the SRH.

At one time I too could see a pop can at 200 yds. Now I squint at 55 gal drums. Aint it funny how the little things get less important with age. I'm sure glad self defence doesn't require 200 yd shots.:coffee:

Thanks for the input guys, I know this subject has been beaten to death. I think I'm on the right track with the setup I have it's just that I like to have "rime and reason" for my maddness. I'm one of those guys that likes to fine tune whenever possible besides, it's all part of the fun right? Hopefully I'll be posting a pic of one small ragged hole in a 50yd piece of paper to prove how much I've learned from this site.

Been a while since playing with the revolvers but my understanding (and it works in my guns) is: The bullet diameter coming out of the case should be equal to or just a very teency smidge larger than the throat diameter. You can feel a slight drag as you push a bullet thru the throat by finger pressure. Then the barrel groove diameter should be equal to or less than the throat hence the bullet diameter. I think of it as the same in even a rifle with the only difference being there isn't a gap at the end of the throat in the rifle. The theory for best cast bullet accuracy remains the same.
