have just picked up this moild and cast some today,,,, cast of straight wheelweights they weigh 155 grs. and measure .357 on base band .356 on front band. Am intrested on how long this design has been around and do any of you guys use it? Is it as accurate as the old stand bys? Also,it is marked 358477F. What would the F stand for? thanks, mark

What a coincidence! I just cast up a few of those myself. My mold is an Ideal, so the design has been around for a long time. Mine weigh 158-159 and measure .353 on the front band and .359-.360 on the drive bands. I haven't shot it yet, but look forward to trying it out.

I believe F means small, as in .357 diameter instead of .359.

Doh! Above comments are for a 357446 which I also cast some of this weekend. My 358477 weighs 153-155 and measures .358-.359 on all bands. My 358477 is a Lyman mold and came in the orange plastic box, so someone else will have to fill in the dates.

According to my log, #358477 first showed up in the Lyman / Ideal line in a chart dated 3/56, and then in Handbook #41, dated 1957; it is still in the line. It's a nice bullet; I used it quite a lot in .38 / .357. The "F" does'nt seem to have any specfic meaning; it may identify the machine or operator who ran it.

#358477 was one of the first molds I bought c. 1980-81. It has been an accurate, reliable design for me for a long time. It's radiused nose profile really helps when using HKS speedloaders--more forgiving of "near-miss" alignment. I have no idea how many of these I have poured and fired--at least 20K. I reserve it for velocities at or under 1000 FPS.

I like that bullet sized to .359 over 14.0 gr. of Alliant #2400 in my .357 mags. It's a good bullet. I also like it with 5.0 gr. of Unique in an S&W 38/44 Outdoorsman.

For an excellent history of the 38/357 SWC bullet check out an article by Glen Fryxell. The bullet in question is covered there
