Holy smokes
Maybe we should make this a group buy.
I have the prices from the foundry
Here they are
Enjoyed speaking with you today and look forward to hopefully helping the economy out. I would like to quote you on the following material:
Truck Load of the following:
Pricing is based on a full truck load pricing FOB: Granite City, IL 62040
Pig lead or ingot lead $ .64/#
2% Tin / 6% Antimony $ .75/#
What we call 20/1 bullet alloy (95 / 5% Tin) $ 1.21/#
Pricing is good through end of February 2009. Please keep me updated if this is something you would like to pursue.
I wuld pick it up with a semi and bring it home then send it out to whever wants it orthy can make a road trip come cast boolits and shoot till there heart is content.
The tonnage can be changed to accomadate anybody But i sure hope we can all work together to get this going.
I know i am getting some ok alot one way or the other.

It's Mayco Ind. Their in Granite City, IL. The Lawrence shot plant.
The pig lead may only come in those big hard to handle pigs. But the 2/6 and maybe the 20-1 come in sectioned ingots that break into three 8 lb peices. 20-1 maybe hard to break , never had any. 2/6 snaps right into with one light whack.
They still make Lawrence bird shot their too.
Last time I ask you got the last discount at 6K lbs.

I would call around more on those prices, Where the wife works they haul lead for a brass/bronze foundry, I can try to see if she knows where they get it. She can move freight for $1 per mile usually. The foundries are increasingly going to more "green" alloys that have no lead in them.

Jamie, I run back and forth to Chicago for work quite a bit. Did you get prices on smaller quantitys? It would be more worth my while to pick up than to pay shipping from you farther up north
Superfly
01-28-2009, 10:41 AM
I only asked on a truck load hoping to get the best price.
I do think they are a bit high on price. so I am still looking for more quotes.
I think we can do better just have to find the right place.
I am concerned about running out of lead or a source for it i like WW to but i only have about 500 pounds of it smelted out.
As for shipping all i need out of it is the cost to run the truck back to my place nothing more.
The next cost will be the shipping to each person and if it can be unloaded along the way home that works for me.
Hopefully this all pans out.

Why haven't you checked with rotometals and they do the shipping which is free on orders over $100 I think it is.
It would be interesting what they would do for a 24 ton order that was going all over the country in various amounts.
Just a thought as I have dealt with them and they are very nice people to deal with

Superfly, If you are picking up in your trailer, Have you figured in cost and averaged out price? You might try contacting the lead smelter in herculanium, MO(just 20 miles south of ST. Louis) to see if you get a better price.

PS I would take 500#

Why haven't you checked with rotometals
Probably because Rotometals charges $2.69 a pound for 92/2/6 and the GB would be $0.75 a pound for the same alloy.

just ask for a "certs required" they will give you a print out of the exact metal and what %'s is in there. even if theres like a .00012% of copper or anything itll tell ya. shouldnt cost that much. they can do it in there lab takes a few mins and a sample from the load. that way if there shooters or not, you will have the data of whats in there. just a thought. -chris

But shouldn't the 2 or 3 numbers equal 100? Not sure how but I suspect the desired alloy would be 92-6-2.....
What does Lynotype usually spec out at?

I'd go for probably 200# 92/6/2 and 200# pure, like to know price first like everyone else, incl. shipping (I'm in south Texas, and I'm not driving most of the way to Canada for the stuff).
By the way, you might want to check with Rotometals for a large group buy: http://www.rotometals.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=Bundle%5Fof%5FLead% 5FIngots%5F99%2E9 Pig lead for $0.79 per # for about a ton, and they say a lower price if you buy more, and shipping is quite reasonable:
This is a Full Bundle of Lead Ingots CORRODING GRADE (99.9%) 1950-2250 pounds. The bundles range from about 1950-2250 pounds depending on the size of each ingot. Each ingot is 53-59 lb. pig lead 20.5 x 3.5 x 3 about 30 pigs per bundle.
If you order more than 1 bundle the price will go lower per pound.
Figure about $ .10-.25 cents for freight in the USA, Call or email with your zip code for a delivered price.
If you want a full truck load it will range from 41000 to 44000 pounds. Call if you are interested in this for the best price.
By the way, they offer the same kind of deal on 99.9% pure tin pigs, $5.99 per pound (or less with a larger order). Shipping the same $0.10-$0.25/pound as the lead pigs. http://www.rotometals.com/product-p/bundle_of_tin_ingots_99.9.htm
I think that very large group orders of lead, tin, hardball alloy or Linotype from Rotometals may be the way for all of us to get large, dependable, known quality metal at a good price, and to benefit a company that advertises on this site.
BTW, I have absolutely NO connection with Rotometals, this just seems like a great way for all of us to shop for our base materials.

Any price I would be willing to negotiate with a seller has to be based on the current scrap spot price. Hauling becomes the next major obstacle. Putting together a group buy would seem to require a group in the same geographic area. I am finding other large scale sources of wholesale scrap lead in various categories. All of it in quantities to large for me to use. Split up between a few individual users, these could bring base costs way down. Compare scrap spot price with Rotometals retail prices listed as an example.
