There has been several posts in the past about 22mag and 22 LR being different sizes. I took one of each apart today. The bullet in a win 22mag is .224. the bullet in a win super X 22 long rifle is .224. SO where do some of you get that a 22 LR is .220? I dont know what powder win used but there is 7gr in a 22 mag. It is a full case of very fine ball powder. The 22 LR is 1gr and looks like Bullseye. Just for your info. Was a boreing day rick/shotman

The .22 long rifle etc. are supposed to be .223" diameter, and were actually so at one time.

Now slug some barrels Rick and see what you get. The Mag came .224 right from the get go and it's bullets reflect that. I don't know if any 22LR are made in .224 today, but traditionally they ran -.223, some have been reported smaller. This is why you'll still find a few .223 CF bullets listed here and there- there were many 22LR barrels used for conversion to CF wild cats back in the day and they generally ran around .223. Some barrels makers cut them that way for CF and so the bullets are still offered. Get hold of any of the older books like Sharpes, "Complete Guide to "Handloading" or any of the gunsmithing books and they'll lay it out.

It's not the bores that are different, it's the chambers. The .22's other than the Mag are heeled bullets, the case and bullet are the same diameter. The bullet is made with a heel on it to fit inside the case. The .22 Mag bullet is inside the case, like most of the cartridges we use. This makes the chamber larger than the bore.

Bret take rem gold or a win super X and mike it. I used 2 different ones and the part that is outside the case that engages the rifling is .224. A win wild cat IS less that is all the ones I have on hand rick

The bullets are different diameters. S&W made the M-17 22LR, and the M-48 .22 Mag, both K-frame revolvers. They would fit a .22LR cylinder to a M-48 so the owner could have a convertible (I have one), but they would not fit a Magnum cylinder to the M-17 due to the smaller bore in the barrel.

Just an FYI... My M-48 shoots more accurately with the LRs than it does with the Magnums.

I have a Colt pistol with two cylinders.

The 22 mag cylinder was just as accurate as the 22 RF.

I'm just telling ya the way it happened. As I said, I don't know what they cut 22RF barrels to anymore, but .223 used to be sort of standard. When you think about it .224 would be about right for soft lead in a .223 barrel.
